Up until this glorious weather appeared over the UK, the dominant feature of the weather was strong wind. We all struggled with it and couldn't wait for it to die down.

Now here we are with a spell of proper summer weather and very little wind but how many of us actually take any notice of it when we play golf and how much difference does it actually make?

You see the pro's discussing wind all the time, regardless of how much their seems to be but until the last few rounds I've just ignored a gentle breeze as being irrelevent.

However, I have started to notice of the last few weeks that a little wind does make a difference, not a lot of difference granted but depending on direction, especially with the short clubs I am sure I am seeing its' effect on my yardages and I am starting to take it into account.

Am I going mad? Does a gentle breeze make a difference to us amateurs and how many of you give it a second thought?

I would kill for a gentle breeze. Living on the coast playing golf in the wind is a fact of life, but this year every round seems to have been blowing a gale. Even with the recent good weather, up here has been very breezy. I have hit a number of drives that have failed to reach 200 yards into the wind, 5 irons about 120 ish but downwind.... couple of 2 irons have gone 320 yards and wedges nudging 200 yards, crazy.

This is no different for many of us on here who play links or are close to the sea. Its very very rare I play a shot without factoring in for the wind, it makes a huge difference probably more than the majority of people on here realise

We get very few days without any wind where i play.

I did play at Elgin (parkland course) in a league game a couple of weeks ago with next to no wind that was a nice change, esp the day before it was a 35mph min and was on the tough side.

This Sunday in the scottish open even a stiff breeze effected the scoring, shame they didn't get it everyday, as that would have sorted them.

I heard something mentioned, may have been during the Scottish Open (May have been Radar), where the chap said if the wind is less than 10MPH, it makes no diference what so ever.

How much difference 11MPH makes is open to debate :D

I'd be surprised if that was the case, but I'm no expert

We're used to it up here even tho its 24 degrees up here its blowing 15-16 mph or a 1 club wind some days its well into the 20's very rarely do we get flat calm days

Our course is wide open, with little to no tree lining to protect it. I am fine judging the winds into the face, and usually take enough club to hit the target (depending on the quality of strike).

With the wind behind, I certainly find it hard to contain the thoughts of "get the driver out, this one is getting launched" and invariably end up swinging too hard at the thing. Usually, my provisional off the same tee is a much better hit haha!

Cross winds, I find very, very difficult to judge and often end up giving too much allowance for the wind movement. This was made all to clear to me in my first experience of links golf in Wales, in December.

Stone me, how you gents can put yourself through that every week is a mystery to me.

I think a little wind does make a big difference to your yardages, I mean I know how far I can hit my 50* wedge, I dmd'd the pin on my last round and it was within range, I forgot about the slight tail wind, took my shot and over shot a good 20-25yds.

I think I read somewhere that each 10mph requires an extra club. So a 10mph breeze is significant.
Cross winds do have an effect but I bet most golfers make too much allowance.

I've read something similar. I'd love to be able to play a reliable punchy iron shot but I just don't trust that shot with a card in my hand. Practice needed.

As a general rule though an extra club with an easy swing should be fine. Focus on crisp contact as a mis hit will be exaggerated.

The trouble is, you take an extra club to take a normal swing and.....then......try to take the skin off it and......bang, smash, wallop

:smirk:

Being by the coast the winds always on my mind and makes a massive difference to my club choice even into a gentle breeze my carry yardages are affected.

never mind full shots. wind affects pitches and chips. if its quite windy then it affects putting.

even when its so gentle its not worth talking about, its worth thinking about!

Normally at my course there are a number of holes that always seem to play into the wind and it definitely affects club selection. This week, holes like the ninth which is one of these are playing with no wind at all and I've not worried about it at all. If anything, the additional bounce and distance is more of a havoc on club selection than the zephyr of breeze we've had
