I guess it was only a matter of time tbh

You can't blame them really with all year round golf and lots of money and ranking points but they IMO have to find a way to balance it out

Everything weighted in favour of the "Target Golf" PGA tour

One of the reasons, IMO, is the college system in the US.

A fair number of our best amateurs end up at college there so going back isn't such a huge leap when/if they get good enough. Wish they had a similar set up here (for all sports not just golf)

Uphill battle for the Euro Tour, not sure what they can do really as the sponsorship dollar in US dwarfs 99% of Euro Tour events.

Money talks. Can't blame folks as a $20m earner (for the relatively successful ones) over a few years can certainly make a difference to someones life. I'm sure Willet is just looking out for his family etc. and I'd be sorely tempted if in a similar position. Can't see it changing much unless the prize funds do.

They only thing I can think of is ranking points based on events as opposed to the players playing in it. Ranking points attract the better players which could then attract the sponsership

Hearing players could miss the PGA is big blow - that sort of event should be up there with WGC and the Players

But as you say it's a big uphill battle.

Can't blame him really, pretty much guaranteed weather all year with the sun on your back.
Massive money and a fantastic place to live

True, expect he'll end up in Florida with all the other ex-pats where the tax regime is more 'friendly' than other states.

European Tour punched above its weight for a while but its back down as a feeder tour to the PGA Tour now. Apart from The Open, seems like the only events that draw a few Yanks off their own tour are the January Dubai/Abu Dhabi events.

It is what it is, 90% of players, if they are good enough, will end up in the US.

he got a five year tour exemption for winning the masters ,be silly not to take it up ,appearance money alone would be worth a shed full of dollars ,and at the end of the day its all about the green backs.

Shows how far he's come in a relatively short space of time. Been performing fantastically on the European Tour for around 2 years, win a major, and now taking up PGA Tour membership.

It is what it is, good luck to him, and we'd all do the same. Presume he will still play in enough European Tour events, just like Rory etc.

Better world ranking point, better money, and to top it off less traveling!

One of the magazines put up the difference in travel mileage from Euro tour to the US tour. The difference was nearly 3 times as much on the Euro tour. The problem is it's not really a Euro tour anymore it's a world tour.

The worlds best players mostly play in the states.

Chubby Chandler said after the Masters Willett would be playing more European events this year but his schedule next year will be split between the two tours. I can't imagine his wife will want to move to the States any time soon with a newborn baby and their families here.

He'll probably join Lake Nona and move into a gated community with the likes of Donald, Rose, Poulter, Casey and the rest.

He'll then have the choice of playing 8,000 miles away this week in China for a first prize of around 400,000 euros or pop over to Texas and play for over 1m Euros first prize

Who was the last masters winner that wasn't already on the PGA Tour ?

Currently being on the PGA tour is not the same as receiving/declining a (further) 5years exemption though

The point I was asking is who's rejecting and not taking up this ticket. Is it done often, infrequently or never

Doubtless Chubby Chandler has been making lots of phone calls to get new sponsors for Danny and they'll all want him to be playing on the biggest stage. Total no-brainer and good luck to him. What's needed is to change the criteria for Ryder Cup qualification, it's crazy that Paul Casey is playing some of the best golf of his career but he won't be playing for Europe.

I expect no one has turned down any invite to the PGA or any exemption. And no one was expecting Willett or indeed anyone to turn it down.

I hope they never change the qualification for the RC - the ET has to protect itself and the players represent the tour when playing the RC. If a player isn't willing to support the tour then they shouldn't be able to play in the RC.

Personally I want to see the best European golfers playing for Europe.

Could you see what would happen if they change the rules ? The ET would lose all the top golfers - the whole tour would suffer.

The players know the qualification criteria and the players make their choice - it's clear that Casey doesn't want to play in the RC for Europe. He has made his choice and it shouldn't be changed to please one player who hasn't featured for Europe for nearly a decade now ( whilst Europe have won every RC in that period ).

It would be a very sad day for golf if they removed the the qualification criteria
