Will this really be the future for electric cars?

40% of car owners in Britain have no off street parking so it wouldn't be practical for them to have an electric car.

Could this be the answer?

Cost to install per unit?

Nice niche idea, very tidy, but the shear scale of rolling this out in the numbers required , I'm not so sure. Then again, the govt may have a spare few billion now that HS2 may be binned off.

No, I don't think so. Too many likely problems with yobs etc to let there be uninterrupted, lawful charging like this taking place.
I'm in favour of the principle of electric cars, but until the 40% can take their battery from the car to charge indoors overnight, they won't take off.
The way that technology finds answers to apparently insurmountable problems means, IMHO, that , as I charge my golf buggy battery as I've described above, it will be available for cars sometime in the future.
Miniaturisation is something engineers are good at.

As post 3 says the Yobs would have a field day either vandalising it or just unplugging . Really needs to be something that a car can park on top of and somehow auto connect to charge points below.
Only a very low voltage 12 /15 volts required, so it should be V-easy for some bright spark to sort it out :D .

Since it's now being said we need to rethink car use by 2050, because obviously the car is OUR biggest source of CO2, I do wonder if there is really any point with spending money on something that will be banned effectively in 30 yrs.

It’s a very good idea , I hired a plug in hybrid for a weekend and when charging the cable locks in place and can’t be removed by anyone unless the car unlocks. I’m sure some sort of similar simple tech could be used here

Removable batteries leave it open for people to use 3rd party batteries to save money if the car had to have a new one or one promises a better battery

As with phones this has proved dangerous so would hate to see it in play in cars!

Looking at a leaf myself for my next car to replace the car I use for work. Could literally drive to and from work (50 miles a day) for around £10 a week at today’s prices

It could be something like 2 miniature tram lines running half buried the full length of a road.
The road I live on looks like a patchwork quilt, it’s had so many holes and trenches dug out of it.
So I just can’t see anything happening for years .
Government uses motorists as a cash cow and dosnt spend anywhere near enough on the roads.
Until this changes nothing will change imo.

What about people who live in high rise buildings, terrace houses.flats with no off street parking.
It’s just not going to happen!

Did you watch the video? They addressed that last bit

I did watch the video.
My take is every pavement in the country would need to be taken up.
And I have to say I wasn’t impressed with the tarmac job either.
It’s a great idea in principle but you could be sued if someone falls over that cable.
Just dosnt look vandal proof enough.

Few thousand volts should help 😂

Your not allowed to do that unfortunately.
It’s sad really that when you see something really good like this the first thing that comes to mind is “ will it be robust enough to handle vandalism “

Think that’s true of every single tech out there

So much good can be provided but morons decide to destroy it

What annoys me is when they get hurt or worse during their little trashing sprees they have the cheek to moan about it. Shouldn’t be there in first place in most cases
