Will playing with less clubs improve my golf... what clubs to take?

I've just taken delivery of a Mizuno Weekender bag with the plans to just head out for a quick few holes after work with 7 or 8 clubs in my bag, rather than the hastle of taking the full cart bag with me.

I'm thinking i'll leave the driver and take the 3 wood, 21º utility, 5, 7, 9, 53º, 58º and putter. If i want, i could always chuck my 6 and 8 iron in there as well.

Does anyone else play with less clubs in their bag, and what effect does it have on your golf?

I regularly do the same during the Summer evenings. Take this lot out 1st time then swap and take the other half the next.

It will help with shotmaking and hitting knock downs etc.

Hi

Seve always said that most mid handicap amateurs could play just as well with half a bag of clubs.

I play off 12 and only ever carry 10 clubs all year round. In fact i have just got in from playing having shot an 80 round my course with 9 clubs!

Sometimes.....usually costs me 4 or 5 shots to play with a 6/14 set. Costs me almost nothing to take out a fairway wood, and 2 long irons. 11/14 set

I've heard all sorts of stuff about "creating shots" and "learning new skills" but t.b.h. anything I might have learned is then hardly relevant when the whole set comes out. My "best" shot last time I played a 5 club game was a low 3/4 shot with a choked-down 5 iron.....hit the green (135 yards) and made a birdie. BIG DEAL.....if I had 135 in a normal game, I wouldn't try this again!!!

It's easy for "properly talented" single figure players to "show off" with their skill but I can't be doing with it.

I reckon I can play to my h'cap or close with
high loft driver, rescue, 5-SW and putter. (That's 10 clubs). If I played off 7 or 8 say, I'd either need more clubs to achieve this OR learn some clever shots.....

are you off single figures? if not, forget it!!

Depends what you want from it really.

If you are looking to lower your score then probably not but I do it occasionally with clubs I don't get on with (Mr 9 is still less than welcome in this house) to try and get a bit more familiar with and to try different types of shots (full LW for example).

This can however mean a miserable rounds with snakes made of metal and not some revelation that you too can hit Phil's flop shots.

Re: Will playing with less clubs improve my golf... what clubs to take

During my round yesterday I only used 8 clubs.

Driver, 3 wood, rescue, 6, 8, PW and LW and Putter. For some of my standards I just need to try and sort out the fundamentals before I try and hit more throughout the bag. However my other clubs were still in the bag.

Before our Christmas 'do' we have a 'three clubs & a putter ' comp; afterwards it's the same comment every year...."Why do I bother lugging a bag-full of clubs around, my score is damn near as good with only four!"

I think today I hit every club in the bag except the 4 & 6-irons. Another day it might be the 5-wood, 8-iron that get neglected. Lies change every time you go out - why make it difficult?

Of course the counter argument is that with fewer options you make fewer wrong choices.

On most courses I could get by with half set of clubs, but when I make mistakes there is always one that I would like to have had with me, I could get by though so it might work for some people.
