Hi all

As some of you may know, i am in the hunt for a new club for next year.

I have narrowed my selection down to two, Chorley GC and Wigan. Now i say that without having played Wigan yet.

Had a knock round Chorley on Friday and i have to say i am very impressed. Really nice vibe about the place, everyone i met was friendly enough and some cracking holes.

Wanted to play Wigan as it is only round the corner from me and is (nearly) the same price bracket.

Are there any members on here? curious to see how the two compare from a members perspective

Thanks

Theres somebody off here who is a member of Chorley and wears a tea cosy on his head in winter.

No brainer, Chorley it is

Leave my mate Davey out of it Coolio.

I've played Chorley, but not Wigan since it became an 18 holer. Wigan has the benefit of having a stately home as a clubhouse. It also has a moat. Thats right, a moat. I envy your choice mate. They're both quality courses. I know which I'd pick, but thats based on the fact that I have a friend who's a member at Chorley...

Amen to that. Haven't played either, but Birchy's first sentence summed it up :D.

Oh, and if I remember correctly, Big Davey doesn't own it. He just stumped up the cash to convert it from a 9 holer to an 18 holer. He does think he owns the place though. I'd give him priority on the first as well.

I heard once that he broke his leg in an FA Cup final. Anyone else ever hear that....:D

I've heard it in person mate. :D. I can also hear the faint whisper of crying from jealous Noblot and Bury fans who wish they had someone like big Davey at the helm...;)

Lol, I bet you have as well!

In the meantime I'll turn the league table upside down and enjoy looking down at your lot.... :(

Ps: this could well require a transfer to the out of bounds section whilst leaving the actual required golfing answers in here.... :D

Nah, none of the Mods bother looking at threads that are about Northern English Golf. You can get away with anything if you simply title your thread "Golf in Burnley" or something similar...;)

I can't comment on Wigan as I haven't played it but I'm sure you wouldn't regret joining Chorley.
Comps every Saturday and some Sunday also some full weekend comps. Midweek medal Every Tuesday (no set times, just roll up)
Plenty of Roll ups, Sunday and midweek. All comps booked Via BRS/ intelligent golf.

Its a very active club with lots going, I can honestly say in 4 years everyone Ive played with I would play with again. did you go in the clubhouse?... Great bar with views out to the coast and up to the lakes, Also good pro shop with friendly pro.

Is there a waiting list atm, Ive got a feeling there is. I'm sure you'd get in next Feb' though.

I'll have to get up to your gaff Davey. How does it play in autumn/winter?

If your up for a weekend game in the next month or so, I'll be game, unless LFC are romping the league, in which case I'll start going the away matches again.:whoo:

2 weeks time alright then?

Would be good to take you round Royal Chorley mate :D
It might not sit well with your comp' days but any Sunday up until the end of the season is fine.

Thanks pal

I really was blown away by Chorley if i am honest. Some of the holes are very memorable like the 1st, 3rd, 5th (beast!), 8th, 11th and many more.

The elevated nature of some holes really entices you to get the boom stick out (wellied one on the 8th only to see it eaten by the water trough :sbox::D)

Real hidden Gem as far as course condition and layout goes. Very surprised by how impressed i was (even if i did play like a numpty)

If i am being honest, my mind is ind of made up. Just want to do my due diligence as far as Wigan GC is concerned.

Never made it into the clubhouse as my playing partner rocked up with trainers on (i know), so though wise not to bother popping in.

Regarding the waiting list. It would be Feb time i would like to be joining up, as i am still paying my subs at Haigh Hall. Not that i have much chance of playing it during winter as historically it has been a bit of a bog.

Am i being realistic by thinking that joining next year is an option?

Really glad you enjoyed it
We don't get many visitors as its Members and guests only at weekend and I didn't know a great deal about it before I joined, I suppose you could say it is a bit of a Hidden gem.
The 1st really is a great picturesque start,Not as easy as it reads on the card. Your right about the 5th, one of the toughest par 4s I've ever played. I've birdied the par 5 2nd more times than I've parred the par 4 5th.

The stretch from 11- 15 is very nice IMO, I just wish 18 the par 3 had a bit more about it although its a really tough finish. I just think all round it's a very enjoyable course.

Im sure you'd be ok for next Feb' just give the secretary a call to be sure, and try to get a Application in ASAP. Just Let me know if you need any further info:thup:

Chorley without a doubt. Great Club and views, very friendly. The new holes at Wigan are not that good and when I played there was no pro shop.

Regarding Dave Whelan he broke his leg after about 40 mins in The 1960 FA Cup Final with a challenge on Norman Deeley. Blackburn lost 3-0 and being a Rovers' fan I was not pleased although it was a fair result. Derek Dougan, the lanky Irish centre Forward handed in a transfer request on the morning of The Final!!!
