came over for a kick a bout with Macc Town last night. The score was 0-0. Now you'd think that wasn't great...for Wigan, but they should have scored at least four. The things that struck my as I watched them is that they are all (well the 11 that were on the pitch) were all as fit as butchers dogs, and, not to put to finer point on it, ripped. When in possession they attacked like lightening. Passing the ball through the team with ease. When not in possession they quickly surrounded the player with the ball. If they can sort out a goal scorer they must be in with a shout for promotion.

So Wigan get held to a 0-0 draw by a team that finished mid table in the conference lst year and suddenly they're now looking good for promotion. I'll have a pint of what you've been drinking

My son was playing a junior rugby match a few years ago. The team they were against were practising beforehand and were doing the most wonderfuly smooth and slick drills. A few of our parents started to get worried. One of our wise old dads just piped up, "they look good but they aren't playing anyone yet", and then wandered off to get his bacon butty. Our lads ended up thumping them. Moral of the story. You don't know how good a team is until they are playing decent opposition.

Good luck to Wigan though. Apparently the pies are very good so that gets a thumbs up from me

0-0 against Macclesfield and they're in for a shout of promotion with teams like Newcastle, Aston Villa & Norwich just to name a few?

Laughable.

A pal of mine went to watch Donny rovers v Newcastle last night. He said after twenty mins they were counting to see if the Geordies had 11 on the pitch HT 2 nil down. Second half he said they will win league and the FA cup. 2-2 at the end.

Maybe I was a little hasty...but they did look good. If they can get a goalscorer I really do think they'll do well.

That is what one or two said on here last year about MK Dons!

Yes Bournemouth did it a couple of years ago but they spent big on wages and fees, more so than Wigan are likely to do.

Hard to see past the three relegated clubs plus Derby, Brighton, Sheff Weds, and other clubs bigger than Wigan with experience of the Championship. Wolves are likely to have some money to strengthen then you have QPR, Ipswich, Forest, Cardiff, Bristol City, Reading, Leeds, and even my lot (Birmingham City).

Hard to see Wigan getting past all but one of them for automatic or surviving the play-offs.

Experience of the Championship??? Latics have spent 12 of the last 14 years in either the Championship or the Premier League. In the last 15 years they've had 3 promotions and 2 relegations. They've been in 2 major Cup Finals, winning one. They've had plenty of experience thank you very much.
Not that I'm saying that we're good enough to go up, but we deserve more respect than we appear to be getting on this thread. Unless you're one of the "only big clubs deserve success" zealots. If so, then I suppose we should just be happy being allowed at the same table as the big boys.

Could you tell me where I have shown a lack of respect for Wigan.

All I have said is that, before a ball is kicked, there would seem to be a number of clubs in the Championship better equipped to mount a promotion challenge.

Their recent experience includes being a poor Premier League side, not helped by Martinez's inability to organise a defence, a poor Championship team and a League 1 team that did not secure promotion until the last day.

Of course we shall have to wait and see as it's all speculation and guesswork at this time.

That "poor Premier League team" were still above every one of the teams you mentioned. Martinez may not have been the best tactical manager, but he won the FA Cup and kept us up several times. Along with Paul Jewell and Steve Bruce. We may be a small club, but I'll take our recent history over every one of the clubs you mentioned.

Actually you were behind at least three on my list (Norwich, Villa & Newcastle) but as a fan I would expect you take the view you have.

As someone who has sadly witnessed the Championship for the last 5 years I am merely offering an opinion.

We've finished above all 3 of those teams.
I appreciate its only an opinion, but I genuinely believe that the success we've had over the last 20 years deserves more respect than it gets sometimes. I don't know what will happen this season. We may even get relegated. But I know we've got a decent young team. A very promising young manager, and a Chairman who wasn't even born when I used to follow home and away :D
