Why would you mark and align ball for a 1” putt?

Saw it on TV from the weekend golf but can’t fathom why it would be needed

Player putted from about 40’ to literally an inch then marked and aligned ball before they tapped in (even if the ball was egg shaped it would still not need aligned at that distance)

They didn’t mark/align on their other tap-in putts, just this one, so I assume they had good reason

I've ruled out a damaged/cut ball as they would have shown FC and changed it before their long 1st putt

Any Ideas?

Maybe it picked up some sand on the way to the hole...?
To be honest, even if it had half a ton of mud on it, there's no reason to do anything but knock it in from 1 inch....

Yeah thought about that but no ball cleaning done either, just lift, rotate, replace (ball didn't get lifted any more than half an inch off the ground)

Couldn't sleep last night thinking it over :D

I totally agree... however, I played a few weeks ago and my pp went to knock it in one handed backwards (if that makes sense) and he brushed the sole of his putter with the top of the ball and it barely moved..... he got some stick!!!

Perhaps there had been some locker room whispers of players gaining ground when replacing after marking, and it was his of showing 'not me guv'.

Who was it?

Can't believe it was an inch, although It's quite normal to exaggerate over an inch.

If it was "literally " an inch, I'd expect them to exaggerate the wait to show how unlucky they are in the forlorn hope it may still fall in

It was In-Kyung Kim (on the 7th green IIRC on day 3)

Literally was an inch but it was never going to fall by itself. Great long first putt downhill, just weird to see her put marker down/turn the ball, lift marker and tap in)

If he'd of done it on every putt then PSR. The psychologists like to drum into them do it the same every time regardless. But it sounds like it wasn't that.

I'd say it was just one of those daft things players do from time to time. Might have been a bit steaming after not holing the putt and just thought pick it up.

I've had a PP miss a 1 inch putt :D. Went to knock it in 1 handed and just brushed the top of the ball and it literally moved a 1/4 inch. PMSL. He didn't see the funny side.

Did she use Aimpoint as well? :D

I hate it when caddies line up players putts, more so when they lie on the green to do it. I don't know why that makes it worse but it just does.
