Why is work experience important when joining a golf club?

I'm looking to join another club, I need 2 members and a reference from these members as well as a letter of recommendation from my current club and I need to have an interview with two of the clubs directors.

Some might say that's a bit much but I knew this already and I chose to get on with it anyway. What has taken me by surprise is however, is that I've been asked to provide my work history.

Why is this relevant? I work in a management role for the second largest company in the UK but would it make a difference if I swept the roads or cleaned for a living? Worryingly I think it would and that just isn't acceptable.

Whether you're a doctor or a burger flipper, if you like playing golf, know the rules and have etiquette....then I couldn't give a toss.

Years ago when I was in my 20's my Father and I could not even apply to get into a private club in Leeds as we were Bricklayers. We wouldn't have had a chance. Now thankfully things have changed. The annoying thing is that even though we were deemed unacceptable to most clubs due to our social standing when we did get into a club we found we had a better level of etiquette and decorum than most of the other members.

I'd probably go elsewhere if I had to supply that level of information, doesn't sound like my kind of club.

Tell them you are looking for somewhere to give your hard earned cash to. Not applying for a bleeding job. Seriously, people do get jobs with less fuss.

Make up a CV including a spell when you were a male porn star and see what they do ;)

So what if you don't have a job but have the funds to still pay for the membership?

Sounds like a golf club that needs to get with the times to me.

The receptionist was very arrogant when asking me about it. I almost reminded her she was just a receptionist but that would have made me just as bad.

Which club is it? It doesn't sound like you're gonna fit in if you feel like having a ruck with the receptionist

Maybe they would just like to know what your job and not actually make any judgements against you

It could just be part of their normal procedure

Work History? That's surely a question - and as such it is a question to which the answer can always be Yes! - even although parts of that work history (or indeed all of it) might simply state 'seeking employment'.

Wanting to know your job and wanting to know your work history are two different things.

What i dont understand is private clubs such as this one will probably say at their AGM "i dont understand why we're lossing money". I really hate the hole private club thing

Nothing wrong with private clubs - they asked me my work in my interview.

why?

I'm a member of a 'members' club, I never had to give my work history, it's just this club that seems to ask for this.
I just think unless you fit the mould they can be very unwelcoming places. I play beau desert twice a month, i arrive dressed and ready then leave striaght away. All to avoid the type of welcome you get. i prefer resort golf but could still real off a few things that i dont about like that too

That's all you need to know about that club. I'd be taking my money elsewhere if I were in your shoes. I'm looking at various clubs myself and one of them has the old interview etc but if I get the same vibes you have then I shall walk. :)
