Why is the driver so hard to hit?

Because people try to hit it too hard. If you cant reach with a 9, club up to an 8 If you cant reach with a 6, club up to a 5 With a driver, you can't club up so to reach, you have to hit it harder. WHEN YOU TRY AND HIT THE DRIVER 10 YARDS FURTHER, YOU WILL HIT IT 10 YARDS LESS. Find out how far your driver goes with a comfortable swing and try and hit it that distance ALL THE TIME Obviously, wind and slope will have an affect on that distance but if you learn to swing the driver the same every time, you will find more fairways. I was once told to "hit it as hard as you can, without losing balance".
What are your thoughts on that, is that being too aggressive in your opinion?

It depends on the result. If you can hit it hard and straight, go for it. I was referring to the guys who get faster and faster as the round goes on, especially after a bad hole. Stop trying to hit it further than the last one, try and hit it the same.

Driver is the only club at the moment that i feel comfortable with....

I don't hit it far but the majority are FIR or first cut....

Off the fairway I have no confidence at the moment, my ball striking is really erratic.

Anyway, my Vice selection box has just arrived and I have a stableford comp tonight.. So here we go again!!!!!

I always found hitting driver easier than most other clubs. The ball is sitting high on the tee, the clubface is huge and I always had he feeling that the club is doing most of the work for me there. Compared to my other clubs, the driver always felt "lighter", despite the long shaft and huge clubhead, and therefore a bit easier to control in transition. The only thing I am struggling with is that I leave the clubface open too long and hitting it from the heel on occasion, hence the slice. It can happen with my other clubs as well, but the more lofted the club, the less severe are the consequences of that.

Another one for the easy driving club. I'll tend to go at about 80% for the first few holes, once I feel fully warmed up and ready to give it a bit more I will. By 16 I'm usually at full tilt and hitting the fairway most of the time. Just wish I could take that swing to the 1st, I played the 1st as an extra hole in matchplay the other night and nearly drove the green (would have made it if not for the severe upslope at the front). Medal Sunday it's usually a slight pull/fade and 100 yards back. Doesn't matter if I get to the range first, still don't feel warmed up enough to give it socks.

As a short hitter I try to get as much distance as I can, so full tilt with the driver. It's easy to say don't go full throttle if you can knock an easy drive 230 yards.

Bah, taking all the fun out of it!

Does amaze me how I can nail a wedge but flail a driver.

Didn't take me long to realise the swings were hugely different in their level of control.

After taking the time to understand my capabilities and own limitations I was soon bombing a more controlled driver.

I never swing flat out with the driver, I like it to feel like 75% power. I also trim a bit of the length of shaft, things you think would limit your chances of hitting a long ball but they don't.

For the last couple of years my driving has been the most consistent part of my game but I only had a short backswing, so over the winter we worked on a full backswing and its gone very erratic, although today having gone back to a short back swing it was better. Having a lesson tomorrow morning to try and get my consistency back.

That little white fella's gettin' it, he's the enemy, standing and looking over him with hate and venom in my thoughts, then WHAM, take that you little barsteward, and breathe........:smirk:

I remember some years ago I was having trouble with my driver and had a lesson where as a drill the pro told me to try to hit it at the 100 yard marker. It was amazing how well I struck the ball and how far it actually went. Gave me a lot more sense of controlling the driver swing.

Having said that if I don't swing aggressively and make sure I release the club through the ball I get a big fade/slice.

When you hit driver (or any club) easier, the ball goes further! Watch the pros live, their driver swings look unbelievably slow when you're stood next to them. Timing and control!

I am this way thinker. You only have to look at pros and bigger hitters they are giving it a proper rip, but with lovely tempo. Someone swinging it with a slower tempo and gets to over 100mph is giving it a proper rip, the speed is massive, when you really look at the club ripping though.

I love the driver again(after a few off months) and over the years it was always one of my most consistent clubs. I find everytime I try to hit it slowly or smoothly it is bad but when my backswing is smooth and the downswing is aggressive then it is generally a good club for me.

Sure I watched a video once, and the guy on it was saying, you should swing a club to match your personality. Certainly fits for me and my son.
