So everyone moans about the cost of electricity and gas

I'm really peeved about the cost of Lego ! Someone told me last week that Inkjet ink is more expensive than champagne, but that comes nowhere against Lego.

Now this ...

Was one of my daughter's 10th birthday present this week.
Now it took her a good 2 hours to put together with all the instructions and bits and bobs etc., and it was really good to see her apply her brain in this way. And she has been really creative in playing with it since.
But ...
£45 !!!!???.?

Look how big (or not) the bloomin thing is (or isn't) !?
Actually that was Argos' price, and they seem to be the only ones who break an apparent cartel, seeing as everyone else sells this for £50!
Blimey
I reckon gas and electric is good value for money on this basis
Ayone have any "Lego Friends" stuff they want to sell me through the For Sale page ?

I think it's something to do with licensing for the marvel/Star Wars/Harry Potter etc stuff

Still that Death Star is silly cash lol

So you have a 10 year old on and a 8 year old daughet
You buyone a star destroyer and the other a Lego Friends school for Xmas, and the Death Star and a Speed Boat for their birthdays

You will have spent more on Lego than your typical electricity bill!
And people are complaining about the energy companies !

I vote for a government to set up a british state owned Lego manufacturing business

Like most things nowadays extortionate. Games Workshop products are another prime example of this. I do some painting and building of their models during the winter when golf is not an option and price keeps going up and up

Haha - the house is full of it.....
mega blocks do matching brick sizes now - pretty much interchangeable...just not as good designs/licenses - the Halo range is pretty good though.

My lad thinks the price doesn't matter - if they're from Father Christmas apparently we don't pay for them!! I think he's playing me!!! although I reckon this Christmas is the last time - a conversation from this weekend:
"Does Father Christmas really live in the north pole dad?"
"of course, where else would he live"
"So a man, dressed in red, living at the north pole, in a workshop with a load of elves, making toys.....SERIOUSLY dad?"
"Errm... what do you want for dinner"

My daughter does pretty well trading the rare mini people pieces on Ebay.
Some sell for up to £12 each.
Her son has mountains of Lego, mostly picked up cheap at car boots and charity shops.

The company are not stupid as the rarer pieces are generally sold in the more expensive composite boxes.

I see your Death Star, I raise you one millenium falcon..

My daughter loves the Lego friends stuff, she has pretty much all of the sub twenty quid boxes and bags...

Jr loves lego and spend hours playing with it.. but luckily he can also spend hours playing with cardboard core of a kitchen roll - as a pirate sword.

Lego is expensive, but absolutely worth it. Also check out the free lego apps, some have good ideas.

Most things are a rip off these days... do you know how much HVAC kits costs these days ;)

I bet it wasn't just a box of bricks though. Lots of clever individualised pieces to make up ever more realistic 'models'. Back in the day we didn't really use Lego to make models - we just built stuff. We knew it wasn't realistic but that didn't matter - we had lower expectations back then. All these hundreds of Lego designers and technicians and very expensive production machinery...

Didn't take much to design and produce a brick - even although it is a very clever brick.

The free market capitalist answer is that it is expensive because people are willing to pay that much for it. Many products and services are priced based on what the market will bear.

luckily my lil lad is after the cars lego which i have managed to pick up quite a bit half price on ebay, couple of slightly squashed boxes obviously happened coming down the chimney!

And and neat little connection there to the 'power' thread where the opposiote seems to apply becuase the market is a captive one. Don't you love market capitalism - gives human's a bad name :)

Indeed, and in some markets it is better to lose customers so long as the rest pay more. Wentworth applied this to their green fee pricing. 2/3 of the visitors at twice the price is more money.

Much of today's Lego would have been useless for me when a kid as all me and my mate used it for was building forts, castles, ruined buildings and once - Hardian's wall - for our HO-OO scale Airfix soldiers. With elastic bands for arrows, gunfire and artillery we were off.

Legoland, yes? Was down there last week and almost cried tears of joy when my lad pressed the button and the Millennium Falcon started to take off.

MIllenium Falcon - that'll be that new-fangled Thunderbird One upstart. I note that Thunderbird One is much more stylish as it is all curves and not very suitable for Lego modelling unless you go very large - I suppose that's stylish '60s design compared with 80s design :)

70's.Star Wars came out in 78?Lucas wrote in 74-75.And the 60's Tv writters lacked imagination beyond a straight line and some puppets.

Grandpa :D;)
