You hit some terrible tee shot into the cabbage, so you play a provisional ball and it goes straight down the middle, always followed by the exclamation "Why couldn't I do that the first time?" Any explanations for this?

Your original statement is False - provisionals don't always go straight down the middle. I find they invariably head for the opposite side cabbage! :o

Why not take a bag of provisionals onto the tee and hit them first?

I think it is because I know enough about golf to recognise the fault and instigate the fix.

Today I blocked pushed a drive into the trees, clearly I came a little out to in.

Provisional I just took a few practice swings to feel a shot from the inside an tonked one down the middle. Thankfully found the first and stuck the second greenside. For the rest of the round I hardly it a good drive right as I came from the inside more.

It's of the unwritten rules of golf, in the same category as always smacking one in the bunker or water after you've told your pp that you're not going to do that and finding a top-flite or pinnacle when you've lost something better than that in the jungle! :D

One of two things will happen. You'll either nut it miles down the fairway or hit it the opposite direction to the first leaving a 150-200 yard walk between searching for the original and having to play (if necessary) the provisional.

In a medal I'm just as likely to knock it miles in the opposite direction but in matchplay I seem to always hit pretty good shots with provisionals. My theory is that I think I'll lose the hole anyway unless I find the first one so just relax and hit the provisional nicely.Trying to incorporate that philosophy into every shot!
