Played today and a guy playing in front of us was showing his mate his new Garmin s1 watch. The problem was he seemed to have no idea how far he could hit with each club! His playing partner was in stitches as the guy either over clubbed or fell short. Why on earth would you buy a garmin when you dont know your distances with your clubs???

...........to establish your distances with your clubs!

because he is an all the gear no idea golfer, courses are full of them, new to the game never had a lesson go and buy the latest clubs, play with the most expensive ball have the latest electric trolley and the latest high tech gizmo even though they cant play, golf is becoming more of a snob factor now than it has ever been, how many do you see stood on the first tee dressed like the latest star pro with half the stock of AG in their bag all shiny and new, then duff one 50 yds with a swing from a horror movie, gone are they days when you started with a second hand half set, learnt how to play and how to conduct yourself on the course and in some cases off it as well much to the detriment of the game in my opinion.

I agree with the last bit 100%

When will people get it into their heads that there is no direct correlation between having a GPS and knowing how far you hit each club.??
The GPS shows you how far you have to go to a hazard or the green.
This is information that you need to know regardless of how far you hit each club.
If you don't us a GPS you still work out how far your next shot is..by whatever method
If you don't know how far you hit each club why are you bothering?

Same scenario.....

Can we please have this as a sticky in bold print.

I have played golf for 60 years now and never has the above statement been more real.
Trouble is the 'no idea' guys then visit the clubhouse, alleged golfers who cannot break 100 talking about pre shot routines and club fitting EUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.

Learn how to get a ball round a golf course with a bit of manners, in time with some decorum and respect first. PLEASE.

So let me get this right, new people trying the game and buying equipment which in turn help manufacturers produce new clubs/balls that you all use is a bad thing? Should have have to serve their apprenticeship first with crappy old gear?

No wonder the game is s struggling to attract new people with a these attitudes:confused:

Exscuse my ignorance was a heavy night last night . Are you saying that even if you know your distances with each club a Distance Finder will not help in anyway?

I am sure is not the only person seeing the irony of the highlighted text in that post;)

It is the snobby attitude of new players who boast about owning the best of everything and think it makes them good golfers.

No
What I'm saying is that you do not need to know how far you hit each club to get benefit from a rangefinder...
They give you the distance to your target in exactly the same way as a strokesaver or your eyes tell you how far it is to go.

If you find your distance via eyesight and you don't know how far you hit your clubs then you're in exactly the same position as if you'd got that distance from a GPS or strokesver and you don't know how far you hit each club...

I don't know where you & 6 inch play Doon, but I don't see any of that.

Part of the problem is that golfers are told they need gps etc without really understanding why they need it.

I think that it's less snobby than 20 years ago when Mr or Mrs Average couldn't get into a club because they didn't have a handicap, the right contacts or job!

If being snobby is only about the gear you've got but people have the chance to play it's not such a bad game!

Friend of mine who's a very high h/cap and duffs loads of shots, used to ask me how far it was to the green.............fair question you might say........however;
it was a links course
he was in thick heather and grass,
it was blowing a gale into his face
it was raining,
it was at least 280 to go,
he's just thrown up some grass to see the wind direction and speed:eek:

A short expletive from me ensures he's never asked again:rolleyes:

too much pro copying when all they need to do is hit it, go after it, hit it again and work out how to keep hitting it consistently...

oh, and have fun

Know exactly what you mean. They also have the cocky attitude and mouth to go with it.
Mind you gives you something to laugh at.

I honestly couldn't care less if a high handicapper chooses to use a gps.I suppose it gives something for the low handicappers to look down their nose at,because obviously they need to be kitted out in a all the top brand gear.
