...have numbers on them?

In a dozen, each sleeve will have a different number on them, anyone know why or what the point is?

May be a silly question but always wondered.

So that if you and I are playing the same ball type we know whos is whos.

Less your a tit like my buddy who likes to play the same ball as me even after I have told him what I am playing. :(

Isn't that why you're supposed mark them?

Yes, but people have only just started marking them in the last 10 years or so.

The number system was originally what was used to identify balls.

Guess they just left them on there as a.)not everyone marks their ball and b.)It's a double check incase of the unlikely event of someone using the same markings and ball as someone else or as one they might find in the trees while looking for their own.

Not such a daft question.

It also makes you wonder why the "big boys" don't use numbers up to 9.

I played a Titleist 4 out the rough t'other day and handed the hole straight to our opponents. I'd played my partners Titleist 4. :o

I'm going back to Wilson Staff. No bugger plays them around here.

Same here, playing a Wilson Staff pretty much guarantees that I will not get mixed up with anyone elses ball.

Wilson staff? I was playing one two years ago. Marked with a green line and a shamrock. Tee'd off, straight down the middle. Playing partner, ditto, get down there, he is playing the ball I lost the day before. Identical number, identical marking. Bugger.

Don't rely on playing a more obscure ball, even if it is a kasco 88. Some one else will have one.

I like that there is another shamrock "marker" out there Murph. Mine match my MD Donegal putter. My pride and joy. Recently changed balls from Noodles. Found a boy from Mayo on EBay who bought my leftover Noodles....complete with shamrocks!

You're a spoil sport. :)

I normally can't go wrong spotting my ball - it's the one down the middle. It's from there it all goes wrong.

I used to mark mine with a version of my avatar marked in sharpie.

Then I got smiley face golfdotz but found that although they did a the job on my Nike SFT's, they hate the surface of the srixon ad333 usually last 3 or 4 shots before I had to pull out the sharpie, they also don't perform well on cool wet days compared to warm ones.

This week I have received 3 dozen fresh Nike PD softs printed with my logo. Shouldn't have a problem now. Still felt the need to pour out all the boxes and sort them by number. They had been put back randomly after printing and this annoyed me. Think I might be a bit OCD.

I normally try to play a ball with the number 1 on and have the number 2 marked ball in my left pocket as a "frightener" or provisional.
No mistaking then which one is which if I've had to re-load

random thought, but could the reason that in a dozen you will have one sleeve each of 1-4 be that each member of a fourball would have a 'unique' ball?

also, why do you never see any ball higher than 4 on general sale? can't be that everyone that is superstitious could it?

I used to play a titliest number 8, can't seem to get anything above 4 now, must be the higher numbers weren't selling.

There's a market out there for a mould that fits a ball so you can colour in your own designed logo
