Trainers on the course (I can have golf shoes which look identical, but not actual trainers).
Trainers (or deck shoes, or open toed sandals with or without socks) in the club house.
A tee shirt (but I can wear a mock neck, which is nearly identical to a tee shirt).
Denim jeans (but I can wear jean cut trousers, which are pretty much identical to jeans, just no rivets and can't be denim blue coloured, but can be blue).
Combats. In any colour.
Un-tucked shirts (yet most of the larger athletes end up half and half and look a mess).
Base ball hats on backwards (looks stupid, but what really is the problem).
Shirts with slogans (I can have a logo, but not a slogan, hence I can have the Nike swoosh, but not a fullers London pride badge on the sleeve).
Football shirts (with or without a collar).

Surely if we want to attract new people to golf, some of this out dated guff has to go. What is the actual issue with any of the above? Any one who is not a golfer would find most of this risible, and also incomprehensible.

i think its about keeping more of a respectable look that the chav tastic reebok shell suit in the bar.

One thing is hate is taylored shorts with knee high socks... that is one rule that needs dropping.

Murph : If you're really advocating the relaxing of the rules that cover all of those dress codes, then I'm amazed.

I wouldnt want want to be a member of a Club like that, isnt it called a Municipal ?

Golfers should have standards I think things are to relaxed as it is, you say stuff like this and in the next breath you will complain due to a lack of ettiquite shown towards you

Join a council course, they already wear that kind of stuff.
You wouldnt wear a football shirt out to a decent restaurant, its a way of keeping some things special and above the norm.

Think you should keep standards as they are. I don't believe people are not taking up the game, because they can't wear the alternative clothes you are advocating.

Keep shorts off the course as well, who wants to see mens legs anyway ?? :)

I like to look smart when i play golf, i don't see what the problem is. I for one have never worn jeans to play golf, is it so much effort to wear a pair of trousers.

I'm all behind smart dress, and I definately would never play on jeans.

But there are silly rules which are so out of date

Shorts must have knee high socks

Socks can't have any logo's at all

These sort of rules are stupid

Shorts must have knee high socks

That's an interesting one, two of you have mentioned that but the only time I've ever seen club rules mentioning it, it's been to ask people NOT to wear knee-high socks with shorts.

I can't remember the last time I saw someone wearing knee-high sock and shorts, socks yes, but almost always with sports socks.

I went to play at a local golf club. Went into the pro shop with a smart pair of shorts and normal length socks. "sorry sir but you have to have knee length socks with shorts". As I was to play with a member had to buy a pair of "required" socks.
What a bloody stupid rule. You finish up with 2" of exposed leg so theres no point in wearing shorts.
PS no one would want to see my legs anyway.

These golfers who take the time to smarten themseves up
have my full admiration, theres no room for trainers or jeans
on a golf course ,to my way of thinking these oiks should be
pointed to the nearest skateboard park and let them do
whatever they do.

Judging by the state you turn up to play most forum meets, it would be a refreshing change to see you in jeans, trainers, a t shirt and baseball cap on back to front.
At least I wouldn't mind standing next to you at the bar for a change.

Our club has relaxed the rules with regards to jeans in the clubhouse now in an attempt to get more people to use the place. As long as they are smart and not ripped, torn or hanging off the backside like some youngsters seem to like these days its accepted.

It makes sense as they get a few of the younger ones up on a Friday/Saturday to have a couple and a few games of pool before heading out.

I cant see your point Murph, go to your local pay and play if you want to wear what you want, bare chested and a pair of adidas Samba is not quite my golfing style but feel free!

Why do we have to bend to the wishes of younger people? I couldn't care less if a dress code is unappealing to twenty-somethings, if they do not want to conform for a couple of hours a day stay away.Everyone knows the etiquette of the golf course and it should be no surprise to anyone taking up the sport. A pair of trousers as sober or loud as you like, a polo shirt any colour, jumper, if chilly, the same with enough colours for every kind of person.Golf shoes that look like chavvy trainers if you like. Whats not young or fashionable about that? Why keep pushing the envelope. No jeans, that's about it. No big fuss surely just accept it.

With you drawboy, as a kid a hated the thought of Playing in trousers bug after 3 months of playing at a club at 15, I have never played in anything else.

We relaxed our dress code a couple of years ago to allow smart jeans worn with shoes and plain t-shirts etc. Almost at once it seemed that the dress rules had been abolished and we now allow virtually any clean standard of dress in the clubhouse. But, we repect tradition at all presentations and social events and nobody goes up for a prize without jacket and tie.

On the plus side, our bar is open all the time, we make plenty over it, the majority of our members don't really bother so long as they get their game of golf each week and very few of the older members are that bothered either. All in all the place is much more relaxed and busier than ever.

It's the people that make a golf club not what they wear.

I would love to wear combat shorts to play golf in, they have all the pockets I need for my collection of tees/pencils/spare balls/gloves/cards etc. In fact they feel like they've been designed specifically for golf.
one day....one day....
