Played in a big comp on Saturday and standing on the first tee I was so nerves as I wanted to do well and back up the good scores I’ve had recently in bounce games.

Pared the first two them went in a bunker, plugged took 3 to get out and that was it, from then on everything that could go wrong did.

If I hit the middle of the fairway when I got to the ball it would be in a divot on a down slope, every bunker I found the ball plugged every putt that was online lipped out and I missed the one coming back.
It was a nice day weather wise and not that hot, but I was sweating like a pig with nerves.

Worse round for a few weeks 96 gross with tree 8’s on the card.:(

Got a call on Sunday morning from a mate the mixed comp that was on at Tain was cancelled and did a fancy I knock. Thought why not!

Shot 73 gross and would have been level par if it were not 3 bogeys on the last 4 holes after my mate who was keeping score told me I was level par standing on the 14th tee.

Can’t work it out, never used to have a problem until last year and always enjoyed medals and competitions

Now have not much enthusiasm for medals.

How can I get back to doing it in a comp?

Treat it like a bounce game.
Seriously, don't change the way you play, play the same attitude as the bounce games.
They're really no different.

Its easier said than done, its all about having that card in your back pocket. Try playing for money on your bounce games, i found that this helped me a lot. When it comes to your game, just do the same as you would on a practice round. Don't think to much, and try and relax. Best of luck fella.

Tricky, similar myself this season, 2 N/R's on the bounce, this weekend I am going to put on my drought preventing snorkel and flippers and just go out and enjoy myself.

Always play for money, losing a couple of quid is just not the same, i think i need one of those sports psychologists:(

View the medal as a big glass window.

Keep knocking against it and its eventually going to break. In other words keep plugging away Paddy old bean, the scores will come, all you need to do is have faith and believe in yourself.

Bloody hell Crawford, i was expecting you to take the P*ss.

Something is different now in medals, Alway used to revl in Comps and never suffer stress in anything else. Even When i played cricket at a highish level i loved the competition.

One thing i can think of is we always have drawn comps so hardly ever play with anyone i know and most of the comps I've played rec has been with higher Handicap players.

Last time i shot a low comp round was with a mate in walk on open, and though he didn't mark my score we still had a laugh and it was just like a bounce game. And i won the comp.

Just puttin too much pressure on myself.

Me!!!!!

This part of Syeds comments has helped me in the past:
Furthermore, we may also benefit from reminding ourselves that the big moment is, from a different perspective, not that big after all.
Even a huge exam is not as important as, say, a loving family, or good health. And even a huge job interview can be put into perspective by looking up at the stars and remembering that it is all rather trivial in the grand scheme of things.
Many athletes attempt to change their frame of reference, in this way, just before big matches. At one competition, I remember hearing an opponent muttering under his breath: "It is only bloody ping pong!."

In other words, no one else will care if you shoot par or 99. So theres no pressure!

Couple that with a bit of course management (i.e. not thinking that I have to go for that shot over the water if I want to shoot level par).

Finally, use your handicap. You have it for a reason.

forget about the fact its a medal, go and enjoy, its better than working !! reality is its only golf, appreciate the fact you are playing... if you have a bad hole, birdie/par the next, it all sounds so easy............

Thats great advice, don't give up the day job though;)
