Why can't I hit good shots off range mats?

My golf shots on the course are usually fairly good, but when I go on a golf range with those green mats I seem to hit a lot of thin and fat shots, shanks and snap hooks! Don't if this is caused by me hitting the mat slightly behind the ball and the club head bouncing off the mat or something. I'm almost getting to the point when I stop practising on the range because it saps my confidence! Does anybody else have similar problems, and any suggested cures?

hands need to lead a forwards leaning shaft into impact.

angle of attack 9i to 7i would be somewhere around 4.5º/4º, 6i, 5, 4i will be around 3º hybrids around 3º to 2º, metals around 2º to 1º these ball park figs. angle of attack, down of the clubhead into the ball. (not to be confused with the angle of the forwards leaning shaft which will be a bigger number in degrees.

ball on grass it helps often times disguise the 'flick' clubhead getting to impact before the hands or pretty much at the same time.
but from the hard artificial surface of the mat if you haven't got the hands ahead into impact you will experience what you describe.

short answer - weight has to be on the lead side before impact, head behind the ball. lead hip cleared before impact.

what your experiencing is happening because the low point of the swings arc is trailside of the ball & not couple inches target side of the ball. depending on what happens you get essentially fats so the club skids off the matt, or matt & ball at the same time.

or you flip or pull upwards to miss the matt but the clubhead is then moving upwards into the ball so catches somewhere near the equator.
