Why are golfers golfers?

Why don't we throw away old gear? Are we selfish?

Are we eternal optimists when it comes to the weather? Why do we try and take on shots we know we can only make one in ten?

We keep our stuff because truth be told, we never needed to upgrade it in the first place.

I sell on my old gear, Im selfish because I can be, Im not an eternal optimist re the weather (no need to be with radars these days anyway!), and the joy of the 1/10 far outweights the failure the other 9/10 :)

We keep are old stuff, because the resale value is not the effort selling on. Example my old Taylormade White Smoke putter went to trade it in got offered £15, so I kept it.

Im a golfer because im too old to chase a ball anymore.
I sell my old gear but get peanuts for it.
I don't understand the selfish question and its relevance.
Im always hoping the weathers in my favour.
Because if we pull it off it stays forever in our minds.

We are golfers because we are masochistic gluttons for self inflicted punishment.

I don't throw away my old gear because one day I hope to get my old burner driver and Seve Ballesteros supremo slazenger blades cut down for one or both of my daughters to play with.

I am not an optimist when it comes to the weather, I know it's crap and hate playing in the rain. People who say "thats what waterproofs are for" are Numpties!

Refer to my first answer for the reason We take on those 1/10 shots. That and it feels frickin awesome the one time the shot does come off.

I'm not a hoarder but can relate to most of the other points you mention. I think the key thing for me is every round of golf I play I will hit enough decent shots to entice me back to play again.

I think the game attracts a certain kind of person because if you weren't a 21st Century flagellant you wouldn't play the sport ;)

Why are golfers golfers? Because we're not good enough cheats to be footballers

Why don't we throw away old gear? Because we'd slice or hook it

Are we selfish? No, you're thinking of prawns and lobsters

Are we eternal optimists when it comes to the weather? Not eternal, only until we reach the 1st tee

Why do we try and take on shots we know we can only make one in ten? A pretty lady golfer might be watching

Answered in bold above

Why are golfers golfers? We are compelled to be by some mystical and irresistible force.

Why don't we throw away old gear? In the forlorn and misguided hope that we may just be able to make it do what it did before we parted with our hard earned cash and bought it.

Are we selfish? Well I'm not, as long as I always get my own way

Are we eternal optimists when it comes to the weather? Come on! Most of us live in the UK. What else are we supposed to be?

Why do we try and take on shots we know we can only make one in ten? Because we're totally convinced that even though our PP has just stuffed a 250 yard carry over water we just know we will make it

Ah!! finally worked out how to post this

I work on one out, one in. If I buy a new club I have to sell the equivalent one I am replacing. A good discipline. I have never made a loss on a club yet.

Selfish? - Many are but I am not in that bracket. I came to golf late on after my body gave up on my main sports so I am not obsessive. I understand and accept my limitations.

Weather - I play for fun so if the weather is grim I don't go out. I shake my head in disbelief at the golfers who go out in all weathers. Why?

Take on Shots - Because we are muppets and part of our brains believe we can hit it like a pro. We are hoping that this one occasion is the time the shot comes off.

Golfers are both optimists and pessimists at the same time. All very contradictory.

Why are golfers golfers? Because the alternative is to go shopping with the other half...

Why don't we throw away old gear? Because the new gear might not 'work'

Are we selfish? No chance, I leave plenty of balls on the course for others

Are we eternal optimists when it comes to the weather? Nope, I rely on it - it's the great equaliser

Why do we try and take on shots we know we can only make one in ten? Because we made it once in 10, therefore it is now my stock shot - there were other contributing factors in the other 9 so no need to think I can't make it this time -

Maybe this (above)

Why do I keep old gear, because I have learned that putting an old club back in the bag is cheaper than buying a new one when the current one misbehaves.

Am I selfish? Quite the opposite. I am only out for 5 hours playing golf, when I played rugby I could be gone for days and came back in a far worse state.

What about the weather, not much choice in this country. It is either get wet on the golf course or stay dry in the shops with my wife. I am going for the wet weather every time

Why do I hit the impossible shot, because I am not a pro, my living does not depend on it and I would rather commit a ball to a watery grave with the chance of hitting a wonder shot than lay up.

BY the fact that I keep going at a game I will never master shows I must be an optimist but the fact that I know I have limits to how much I will ever improve shows a galss half empty approach.
