Why am I finding an old fairway Wood easier to hit than my new Hybrid?

I'd never been very good with Woods in the past but decided to have a lesson and now I'm driving reasonably well.
On the back of this I bought a Callaway X2Hot Driver and 3 + 4 X2Hot Hybrids.
I've found the hybrids a bit hit and miss and tend to stick to irons off the fairway.
I then saw a really old Ram 5 Wood in a charity shop for £2 so picked it up and next time out gave it a try. Wow - When I conect it really flies. I'm still hitting the odd duff shot but nowhere near as many as with the 4 Hybrid.
This has really confused me as hybrids are meant to be easier to use for people better with irons?
Not much difference in the lofts as the 4 Hybrid is 22 degrees and the 5 Wood is 21 degrees.

Maybe my swings improved since I stuck the Hybrids back in the garage

Am I missing something? Is there some sort of logic that I haven't realised?

I very much doubt it's the club. Hybrid are supposed to be hit like irons, not a sweeping fairway wood. Could you be trying to hit the hybrid in FW fashion?

My Slazenger 5 wood from JJB sports is unbelievably easy to hit. I have no problem putting it in the bag when I go home.

Cheapo £25 club and works just as well as any wood I've used.

That could be it. I was told you had to "sweep" hybrids like FWs and NOT hit them like irons.
Surely they can't go through like an iron?

They can. They do.

I like to concentrate on getting the sole of the club on top of the spot of grass where the ball was lying. Encourages a downward hit out of the middle (sometimes).

Thanks guys, really useful help and clip. No wonder I've been duffing them.
I came that close to listing them in the classifieds.
Can't wait to get out again now to try them out using the proper technique.

Hybrids are no magic fix, you need to practice with them but the result they give is usually better compared to a lofted wood or low lofted iron.

I find you need to be nice and slow with a hybrid to get the best out of them, its tempting to put a fast iron swing on them or hit them like a wood but they need a combination of elements of both.

I find an iron swing at a wood speed works best.
