QUESTION?

Who will history remember the most?

Angel Cabrera,5 pro wins, 2 being a US Open and a US Masters

OR

Colin Montgomerie,40 worldwide wins but NO MAJORS!!

Interesting Dilemma me thinks!

Its not who you think is the better player but who will history remember!

For me its all about winning majors to be remembered in the history books as one of the greats!!

No doubt Monty was/is a great player but those missing major titles are a blot on his C.V

Worldwide?
Cabrera without a doubt.
In 20 years time, people will talk about who won the Majors.
No-one cares who won the 1996 Murphy's Irish Open.

Who won the '86 Masters?
Who won the '86 Scottish Open?*

*It was David Feherty.

Alternatively - who will history remember. Cabrera who won the Masters in 09, or Perry, the man who led all the final day and let it slip away?

(Not that I begrudge Cabrera the win - put on hole 19 was amazing).

Perry will slip back into obscurity thank goodness.
You only get remembered as runner up if you make an absolute pigs ear of it a la Van de Velde or Saunders.
In twenty years Perry will be a distant memory.

Yes they are a major blot on his cv!

Good question this, obviously in S America it'll be Cabrera, in UK I think it'll still be Monty unless Cabrera could win our open which is highly unlikely as he's doesn't strike me as a seaside player (like Monty).

In the USA I think it'll be Cabrera, he's got their 2 biggest titles after all. Monty is a bigger character there because he's outspoken and a Ryder Cup target and has been ever so close in the US Open.

I'd have to say on a world level, history will remember Cabrera more.

Imagine a youngster over a 4' putt with his mate applying the pressure - what does he say - "This for the US Open" or "This for the European Order of merit". No contest is it?

Each will be remembered..

Cabrera will be remembered for the right reasons, double major champion. You can have the week of your life and win/fluke 1 like Lawrie,Curtis,Micheel or Hamilton but not 2.

Monty will still be remembered for the wrong reasons as one of the best players never to have won a major.

Would he give up the career he's had for the career of say Hamilton who has a major?

I would say most definately yes!!!

Who's going to die more peacefully? Monty....with that niggling thought still eating away at him that he never reached the pinnacle of golf and was never quite good enough to seal the deal. Or Todd, fair enough he's hardly done anything since, but he's a major winner, and on a fine summers day in 2004 he won the one prize Monty would kill for....he won The Open.

I think on the wider spectrum Cabrera as everyone looks at major winners. I think on the European side of things Monty will be remembered as the best player of his generation on tour. In the US though it will be Cabrera for winning two majors. The fact Monty won order of merits won't come into it. He'll only get remembered in the list of those like Perry, Van de Valde etc who let majors go.

Eight Orders of Merit. Worth more than any Major imho

It will depend a lot on the person doing the remembering, but the overall impression will be from the major winners. But people with a more refined thinking about the game and its greats might have a lot to say about people who nearly were as much as those who were!

Look at how popular the shark is and how he will be remembered, not for the one off but for his competitiveness today in the over 50s, he is more remembered for the number of near misses than his success.. A good nickname helps too....Tiger/The Shark/Seve/Monty The Ducks in with a chance. :D

Monty will always be in the history books for his historic Order of Merit history and his herotic Ryder Cup record.

2 Major victories will also ensure a place in the history books so in my opinion both will be legends of golf for different reasons, but both will not be forgotten.

i have to say that yes Angel will be remembered for winning the masters, however i think that most people will remember monty for his ryder cup appearance and his golf on the tour, and they will probably remember him because he never won a major.
