I know that there are others, like me, who fail to appreciate the talents of 5Live's football commentators but yesterday really set me thinking.

With an hour to spare and no BT Sport for the first time ever I stuck with football on the radio and this meant listening to Mr Green's commentary. Hence the question in the title of this thread.

Talk about opinionated, this guy knows better than any manager and can make decisions quicker and better than the players. Incredible!

I thought I had a pretty good memory for players but for the life of me I cannot recall who he played for but he must surely have been a top international to be so knowledgeable.

On the other hand maybe my memory is not failing me and he is just the worst example of the growing trend for "know all" commentators.

Alan green is the single worst thing about 5 live, that and Ian wright and Robby savage...

^^^ That's 3 things:rofl:

I quite like Greenie, he's not afraid to give his own opinion unlike others...

So wait, it's impossible to know about something unless you've actually done the activity yourself?

Uh oh.

This is worrying.

Sorry I thought he was supposed to be a commentator not an analyst whose job it is to give an insight that the layman cannot see for himself. "Expert" analysis from someone who has never kicked a ball in his life is, to me, a waste of airtime.

Leave the analysis to those who have played the game such as Neville, Hansen or Carragher.

Nothing wrong with that:thup:

Doesn't really matter, I am also no fan of either of those two gentlemen but I don't expect they are bothered any more than they are by Green and his pompous utterances.

Alan Green says it how he sees it IMO, much better than those fence sitting twits on BBC and BT Sports etc.

But that is my point. Who is interested in how Alan Green "sees it"? He has no particular football wisdom to impart, never played the game, never managed and never refereed yet he considers himself an expert in all regards.
Unbelievable arrogance!

Did you need to play the game to have wisdom in it ?

Did Motty play for anyone ?

A lot of times the best pundits/commentators are the ones who didn't actually play/manage.

I suppose you could say how can we judge on Alan Green when we ourselves haven't also played or managed at a high level.

Find Alan Green a hell of a lot more interesting than most pundits etc and certainly seems to know his stuff

He is annoying at times , he does rant on a bit and get things wrong but that's half his appeal - would prefer to listen to him commentating over most of them

Don't start me on Motty!!!!

I suppose it depends how you define a commentator.

To me his role is to not much more than put names to faces and provide basic information. Opinions I can provide for myself and supplement them with input from those who have been involved in the game at the top level.

After all if I wanted an opinion on a legal matter I would not seek it from the court reporter but from a skilled practitioner so why, in the case of a football match, would I be interested in the reporter's (A Green) opinion.

John Motson is extremly knowledgable about football - mainly through experience and time spent commentating

Alan Green is also the same

You could use your own opinion - I expect 99.9% do already but have you played higher level or managed
The simple answer for you is. - Don't listen

So by your logic no one is allowed to air an opinion on football unless they've played or managed at a high level? ;)

For me he says it like the bloke in the pub talks, no bull, no "scared of upsetting this manager or that player", I admire him for that. He gets it wrong some times but by the same token he talks a lot of home truths. I particularly like it when he's paired with Chris Waddle, another one who speaks plainly and honestly. Waddle needs to stop rolling his vowels though (like Shearer), that does annoy me :D
