Who videos their swing?

About 6 years ago was the first time I viewed my own swing on video. I was at the range with my nephew and he said I had a flat swing. I had no idea what he was talking about until I viewed his phone recording.

Up till this point I thought everyone swung the club quite similar and I looked like any given pro.

The truth was somewhat different. I nearly wretched as I viewed some chap, who looked remarkably like myself, swing the club around his ankles then up behind his back as if being engulfed by a silver python. Followed by the most over the top motion, freeing said golfer from the slithering beast resulting in the biggest slice you have ever seen.

The only saving grace was that it was repeatable.

Sadly I don't have this video any more but I have been keeping swings for a little while now.

My question is, do you record your swing when practising to see if you are making the moves you want to do? In times gone by I just let the ball flight tell me if I was doing the right thing.

Video shows what is really happening. Even when you feel like your making a massive change, it can sometimes barely be noticeable on film.

I also find it funny to see, no matter how much people think they change, a lot of their original swing DNA seems to be present. Is my swing today much different to that chap with the wrap around shaft? The scorecards are different but I am not so sure.

So, do you bother. Do you find it worthwhile and has anyone managed to transform their swing from ugly moth to beautiful butterfly. (Video proof would be nice ☺)

I have done before and found it very useful. Used to have a huge over the top swing, which gradually became less worse over time, and now is fairly neutral/in to out which im happy with.

Think I'm going to get one of those iphone tripods off ebay instead of getting my mates to record it so I can get a better image.

I use an app called ubersense which is free which is pretty good for viewing the swing step by step.

Looking on my phone I see I've got 187 videos of my swing in V1 Golf App  . Strangely enough none of them looks like the pro ones you can download and compare them to, but I suspect if I takes small bits from all of them and combine them I could probably come up with one half decent swing. Possibly.

I do find them useful to look at my swing plane and also my hand positions after being told by a pro what I need to work on. But I'd be a bit wary of trying to sort out your swing on your own by using videos.

I've only videoed my swing once, and it seemed to show a fat man swinging the club in the wrong direction... I was so out to in that it was actually no wonder that I had a massive slice.

Quite the eye opener.

I've spend the intervening 3 or 4 years battling with and working on my swing path, to the point where it obsessed me. I took lessons, I watched videos, I changed my posture, alignment and grip.

However, the recent session on the Trackman at the Nike centre showed proof that it's paying off, 1.1 degrees right, in to out. I'm hitting my drives with anything between a push and a huge hook, so I'm not finished yet. This improvement has only been within the last 10 months, so it took a long time for me to figure it out.

Sorry to ramble, but I suppose that my point is that the video showed me how much work I needed to do. Without that, I'd probably still be scratching my head wondering why I'm hitting 3 off the tee again.

I also decided to not be a fat man any more, so there's a non-golf positive from it too :D

I do occasionally if I'm working on something, and you're right that what feel like massive changes hardly look any different watching it back.

Also spot on with the DNA argument. No matter how much my swing changes there's still things in there that say it's me.

Dan - That looked pretty damned good to me.

I have done mine before, initially after recording my sons following tips and advice he was given at a lesson. He uses Ubersense. A big shock to the system as my Ernie Els type swing is in fact more like Ernie from Sesame Street in reality. Very depressing at first. Very useful to see if you are doing what the pro has told you after a lesson. You may think you are doing what you have been told but the video, in slow motion, will prove it or not. I have definitely benefitted from it and would recommend it.

Thanks. Quite a few issues on the older video though. Swinging around myself too much, not completing a full shoulder turn, hips release and the arms have to play catch-up, tempo is awful, it's a bit of a mess really. It's no wonder I had such an inconsistent strike. Just wish I was still swinging like the new video, had a bit of a nightmare on the range this week with shanks galore. Hopefully it's just one of those things, and I'll be back swinging properly soon!

Recorded my swing with 7 iron and driver the last time I went to the range, I thought I had a decent looking swing but its far too flat (over-compensation after my 'comeback' to golf started with massive slices all the time) and I think I stand too close to the ball as well. Going to hit a few balls tonight but also going to speak to the pro and get some lessons booked.

Can be a good thing but can also be a bad thing. We all want that perfect looking swing with all the right angles, but this doesn't bother Jim Furyk, Bubba Watson and others.
I used to be so concerned about my flat swing, but now I'm not bothered, only concerned with having a repeatable reliable swing.
Interestingly I got the Mrs to video me the other day in the back garden taking a practice swing. Thought in my mind I would be like Hunter Mahan but can't believe how much it is in fact a double of Matt Kuchars swing :)
I'm quite happy with this since I've been working on the one plane swing after reading Plane Truth by Jim Hardy

One plane flat as a pancake and I love it:thup:

Every time I practice I get the video out. It's good to keep a check on what I'm working on.

Good for reference to look back on. After a lesson and get a few weeks practice in and then compare a couple videos from before and after to see the difference.
