Who should have the authority/power to close a course because of ground conditions. IMO it should only be the head or assistant green keeper.

Opinions please.

The course should only be closed by the greenkeeper but also common sense should prevail and a committee member with the pro should also have the power.

Course manger/head green keeper or secretary/general manager. That's the norm.

Our Head greenkeeper does little more than cut the grass these days. The head of Greens committee tends to open and close it at the moment.

The answer is simple. Do you want a professional green keeper who is qualified to say whether the course is fit to play or a director who's knowledge probably only extends to cutting his lawn on a Sunday afternoon to make the decision as to whether or not the course is playable? I know the quandary that most committees are in these days. The course needs to be open in order to bring revenue into the club and the pro shop but the green keeper has to prepare the course to a playable standard. They also have to safe guard the course for the better summer months. If the course is put back due to playing on it in unsuitable conditions it is he that will ultimately pay the price when the criticism comes later in the year. It has to be the professional green keepers decision every time regardless of the directors wishes.

What about resort courses? We are staying at MacDonald, Portal next weekend with a couple of rounds booked but there seems to be a lot of rain due between now and then. Hopefully they will be a little more flexible than members clubs if there is any doubt but H & S will be the deciding factor.

I like the expression "A course should close itself", we all know when its unplayable, so why go out?

See the other current thread on Winter Golf, and I think you willsee the answer to your question.
