Some of you may be aware of my previous posts regarding not being able to hit my driver in the last few months, both my Brand new Custom Fitted 909, and my G5 too. I did ping a few peaches with a friends 905, but luck I think.

However, I do hit my very ageing Cally War Bird 4Wood with a Steel shaft very well, and then suddenly remembered I had an old War Bird 'Deuce', or 2 Wood, languishing on the rafters of the garage. :D

Suffice to say its working again for me, and more succesfully than any Driver I try at the mo', case in point our 18th yesterday, off the very back White Tees, 392yds........Drive with the Deuce, and a 3/4 54* wedge to 12'.
I can Draw it, which I havent done with a Driver for months, its a very penetrating flight, and gets great roll now we are in mid summer, so its staying with me.

It leaves me wondering just what the benefits of 460cc Drivers actually are, and whether we all get swept up with a tide of 'Hit it further/Bigger is Better' marketing hype ???

:D

For whatever reason I don't like looking down onto the big drivers at address. It doesn't inspire me with confidence as the blurb promises. In fact, it has the opposite effect.

A friend of mine however, loves looking down on his big one, and it gives him more confidence than a smaller headed one.

One man's meat and all that!!

(Yes, I know what I've done!!)

I have never owned a driver that I myself paid for brand new and they have always used cast offs that my old man and his friends were kind enough to throw my way. One thing I have noticed with him and others better off club wise than me is that people manage to convince themselves into putting a mental block on hitting certain clubs and then begin to dislike the look and address of the club due to associating it with bad shots and lack of confidence. And going back to your old club only has positive memories that obviously results in positive shots

I have to say my R7 Limited has a slightly smaller head but is a thing of power and elegance (especially when used by a proper golfer and not its owner). That said I think it is an awesome shape (very old school) and I do feel confident looking at it behind the ball.

Very true. But golf is a 'mental' game as much as it is physical one. No different to any like or dislike that we as individuals have. Be it golf clubs, cars, music or even other people.

I like looking down on a big head on a driver. Im the opposite on fairways though - hate thick faces on them!

Currently 'gone off' my big stick, and so am buying a new one. It is a confidence thing for sure. Not fussed about the size of it, just how it performs. (cheap gag coming on). Longest drive I have ever hit was with a persimmon head, steel shaft. That said, it was a one off, and I am way more consistent with a modern stick.

Have you tried gripping down the shaft a bit per Anthony Kim - tried it on my last round and suddenly everything straightened up without losing distance.
