Our course is blessed with a large number of natural and artificial drainage ditches which double up as water hazards,

now some decide to play out of them as it's rarely wet in there, but on the surface or just below it in the majority of them is large stones or flints. Personally from the 9 there is only one and half way he up another I have
Payed from as I know it's stone free, but loads play from them and then complain they have smashed their clubs up, me I'd rather take a drop and protect my shiney babies

But......... I've noticed I have only bagged. 13 clubs for most of the last three years, and I'm contemplating something like an old 9i / wedge to put in the bag, just for occasions when I'm unlucky enough to hit them.

Does anyone carry a club for similar purposes and do the find the usage warrants it being in the bag?

Have you been on the cooking sherry? :D

I carry 14 clubs already so no room for it. But I would if I was you, could well save a shot a round, or maybe more on some days.

If I take or 3rd par 5 dogleg as an example. If I hit the ditch from the tee, a drop out can still leave 220-250 into the wind and slightly uphill so the best I can do is drop out lay up and then on for four. With a crap hacker I could get to about 180?????.... A GIR Is still possible,,,,

No. I do look after my stuff but if I have to hit from the garbage I will. I remember playing at Saunton once (west course) and on the 1st hole my tee shot went left and ended up on the tarmac road. It was in a comp and there was no free drop so I hit from the road with my 8 iron. A few sparks, ball on the green and no real damage to the club. I have had more damage from hitting stones in bunkers.

I'm toying with the idea of getting a left handed 7 iron (I'm right handed) for those shots where a pesky tree gets in the way of a right handed swing.

Out of interest. Why was there no drop?

Don't be greedy then! Play to the corner, or just a bit past, FW, 7/8i and 1 putt for birdie! Easy peazy!

Sucker bait hole!

We had a forum member craphacker (Colin?) what happened to him? Hello if you are reading this!

Back on topic, I don't think its a good idea to carry an old club on the off chance that you find some really bad rough that you would want to play from. Much better to carry a club that you would use more often and make up the full 14 IMO.

I had designated my 48* for iffy lies. Figured it would be easy to replace as it wasn't part of the set and different to my other wedges. Can be bought individually so any major damage could be sorted. At less than £30 a wedge its not to bad. Now I have 3 matching wedges and they are all shiney and new I will probably elect for the drop until the new 48* becomes a bit more battle hardened.

The ditch on the mentioned hole is more in play than that, imagine around a 230 carry to get over the ditch, to a hole which then turns 90* right, the ditch you have just carried goes from the left side of the fair way, right across and continues the full length of the hole to the side of the green!

If you're only playing 13 clubs, and are settled with your bag, then I guess it makes sense, but as Sawtooth says, it would seem more sensible to add another club that will be in play more.

How come you only play 13? Where's the gap?

There isn't a gap in my eyes, hence only 13.

I did carry a 17*2h and 21*4h but neither suited my home course, we have a par 3 at 200 yards and the 2h was too long, the 4h was too short! I changed to one 3h and things are just peachy!

Usually a club becomes my "crap-hacker" by default, usually one of the wedges. First one to get a big stone chip gets the crap hacking duties. Currently my gap wedge.

Well, that was the way I played it - though as my 12th. Maybe the tees were forward that day, or 'first time bravery' but the ditch across the fairway wasn't noticeably in play. Guys in front had tried to cut the corner, so probably forward tees. Birdied both of the Par 5 on that 9 but got beaten up (beat myself up) by a couple of others.

I have a 'nice' stone dent/nick absolutely smack in the middle of the face/sole edge of my rescue, so would use that if desperate. But care more for my clubs (though it may not be obvious) than any particular score.
