found this in an inferior golf mag but it sums it up for me.

there are two types of golfer; mastery golfers and ego golfers.
mastery golfers are intrinsically motivated and play for the love of the game. ego golfers are extrinsically motivated and play to impress other people or to get validation to their score.
research shows mastery golfers play the course (not the opponent) are more accepting of their misses (rather than punishing themselves) and generally play with a clear free uncluttered mind. which benefits their game.
before you play a round of golf remind yourself that golf is a game of a golfer against a golf course (not other golfers) and that mastery golf is the path to excellence.

so mastery or ego which are you?

im defo a mastery:cool:

To me golf is a game against myself.
By that I mean, every time I go out I want to beat my best score.
The course is there to be taken on,other golfers are there to beat, however I need to beat myself first.

I play because I love the game AND I want to be the best I can be at it. Dunno what that makes me based on those categories and don't really care if I'm honest

Neither and I think it is a rubbish question. Do I win a prize?[/QUOTE

each to their own then and theres no prize. the question or thought process is from a mind coach called Dr Gio Valiante who has been working with recent winner Justin Rose. i only posted as i play with a few forummers on here and there are defo two types of golfers in that group.

I play because I enjoy the game, but want to score well and be a low handicapper.

So which am I ?

Im an ego golfer to a large degree, have been trying to address it and become less so with some limted success lol

Think the question wouldve been far better if it was ego forum poster or mastery forum poster

I always play the course, even in matchplay. Play for par and you will halve and win most holes. Play the opponent and you will chase his good shots and play defensively on his bad shot, which will only to see him hit a miracle recovery that you can't match.

As for your mistakes; if the very top pro's make them, why should we beat ourselves up about our many failures.

A fantastic game with infinite variations... love it.

I love playing golf, for me its playing the course, and making the shots whn you need to do it,when I go out to play a game I just want to play within my capabilities and score well
