A friend and I are heading up to Scotland in a few weeks to play golf and take in the Edinburgh Festival.

We are going to take our chances and enter the ballot for the Old Course, and failing that we'll pitch up early one day and chance it with the starter for spare spots.

We're aware the chances of playing are slim, but we're happy to play one of the other courses, and just to walk about the Old Course.

A couple of questions:

Has anyone got recent experience of getting on the Old Course without a tee time booked?

Which other St Andrews course would you recommend if the OC is not available? Or any other local courses for that matter...

Check out the course review section from this time last year. I played four of the St.Andrews courses and reviewed them all. The Eden, Old, New and Castle.

Am doing the same. My eldest son is doing a daily comedy standup at the Fringe, so 4 of us going up to see that. In the ballot for the Old Course next day, with a slot on the New if we don't get through the ballot. Then a night in the Old Course Hotel, breakfast and a round on the Dukes the following day £139 plus the green fee for Old/ New.

Very much looking forward to it.
