One of the players (Joost Luiten I think) hit his ball into the large/thick bushes in Austria at the weekend pretty tough situation to play out of

Ball was found and a drop taken with a ref in very close attendance... but it turned out it wasn't a penalty drop but actually relief

On screen commentators thought a pipe running above ground behind the player was the reason for relief although the drop appeared to take the ball much closer to the pipe (they said the same)

I'm just curious if the rules experts can help me ID which rule was applied for relief and why (might be a useful one to know in future)

You've got to bear in mind that the Tour have a Hard Card with local rules that they use at all venues and throughout the season. It may be as a result of one of these that the player got relief.

I can think of two possibilities: interference by an immovable obstruction or a burrowing animal hole/cast. Most likely the pipe, or maybe there were marmottes around making holes but I've no definite knowledge of the particular situation.

What could be on the hard card to give him relief? Not embedded ball through the green since the requirement is to drop as near as possible to where the ball lay Can't think of anything else.

Ah the 'I don't fancy that lie much, anything you can do mate' pro tour rule :D

Good point though, whatever it was that resulted in relief might not be something I can use myself

Don't know why but I thought you guys might have access to inside knowledge (bit like the magic circle) that lets you see reports etc from other comps/tours

shame as we saw the shot go in live but when the camera cut back a few minutes later the ref was already there and talking the player through his drop rather than the reason for it

I didn't see it, but if the ball was in a bush then surely he wouldn't get relief from an animal scraping as their was something else (the bush) preventing him from making the stroke?

You are right of course that you would not get relief if the bush made it impossible to make a stroke, but it is perfectly possible to find your ball in a bush and be able to hit it, in which case you would get relief from an obstruction or an abnormal ground condition.
