which handicap

i'm a member of a golf club and i also play once a month in golf society. my handicaps are not the same. we played a course this week where three of our society were members, two played off their society handicaps one played off his club handicap. is there any rules or etiquette that covers this? oh by the way one of those using his society handicap won with 43 stableford points

Well I'm guessing it's not an official competition so what you play off isn't really written down in any rules or ettiquite

But surely a "society HC" is only valid when playing in a society meet ?

He should play off whatever handicap the society rules require.

For example it's relatively common to have it defined as the lower of your CONGU or society handicap for players with both.

Down to the rules/policy of the golf society really. The works society I play in only maintains handicaps for those without a club handicap. Makes perfect sense to me....why have two? We still apply reductions for winning etc to try to spread out the prizes but again that's just a reduction to your score on the day, not a handicap adjustment. Any reductions reset at start of season.
