Hi All,

After a great start to the year winning the winter league and a win in the pros comp last week (42 points and cut to 13.2) I am really happy with how things are going other than I am at a complete loss to find a ball that willl either stay in one piece for long enough to warrant the cost, or doesn't feel like a ball bearing off of the club face.

I generally hit a long ball and after being custom fit for clubs (expensive but worth every penny) can shred a Pro V1 after about 6 holes (callaway x jaws 50, 54 & 58 degree wedges). The conundrum then is to find a softer ball to deliver round the green perfomance with the durability to last more than a round!

I have played with Srixon AD333 / Titliest DT Solo across the winter and tried Pro V1 last week which offered superb performance, but looked like it had had an hour in the park with a bull terrier and was committed to the 'man draw' for 'training practice' later in the year (yes it will be thrown away by the wife in 6 months time having never seen the light of day); callaway's tour diablo also suffered a similar fate.

At the start of last year I would have said that it doesnt matter what ball you hit, but now I think it makes a distinct difference - does anyone have any advice from similar experience?

Thanks in advance!!!

yeah bridgestone make some great balls, my dad uses the NXT tour and loves them but I just cant get on with them. I use Srixon Trispeed which feel good off the face but don't last very long without scuffing up. Last time I bought a dozen off ebay a couple of newer trispeed tours came along in the box but did not use them until yesterday. I used the same ball all the way round and still looks pretty much like new almost no scuffing what soever and no cuts or chips at all out of it despite being in the trees 2 or 3 times.

Might be worth a try.

A ball everyone seems to have forgotten about is the z star.I just used one for 2 whole rounds . Not a mark on it.very soft too, preffered it to my usual penta even, which surprised me.think they're pretty reasonably priced too

ive got jaws wedges as well, so might be able to offer you some tailored advice.

basically the wedges will shred anyhting with a urethene cover so thats pretty much all the premium balls, so depending on how many wedges a round you hit the balls going to end up in the practice bag by the end of it usually.

i hit a long enough ball and as ive stated in other thread my game is really 120 yars in where softer shell balls really come into their own. as such shredding balls is just somehting ive gotton used to.

balls ive tried
zstar
pro-v 1 and prov1x
callaway tour iz and is
callaway tour ix
tm Penta
bridgestone b330-s

all of which are minced by the end of a round so i tend to look around for the best offer and load up before a good season. right now ive got ix's @ £20 per dz, bridgestone b330-s @ £25 and fg tours @ £20-£25

im probably going to use the fg tour as they come of the putter so well!
my point is those wedges will kill most balls but the fg tours are getting on for half the price of the pro-vs and makes it a little more bearable, else moving to a balls with a harder outer shell

Errr......could you point me in the general direction of this wonderful sounding deal???
I've recently paid just over £30.00 for two dozen

various places had 3 for 2 on wilson balls lately, seems AG have currently, £18 per dozen or 3 for £36 but worth checking to see if anyone else has 3 for 2 on

I must either have low standards, not hit the ball right or have rubbish grooves. A ball will last me 3 or 4 rounds before I think it looks too bad to play with.

Just have a think about what you want from the ball. I was in the situation not long ago where I wanted a ball that performed like the v1x but wanted more durability. I tried lots of different balls but to me the key area was the putting, the v1x rolled lovely on the green but nothing else felt like it on the putter face. So this is turn got me back to the v1x, then I was concerned about the price I tried out some of the lake balls and they worked just as well stopped on my long irons spun back a bit on the short irons so in the end I have come to the conclusion it doesnt matter too much what the ball looks like on the outside its the inside of the ball that does most of the work so thats what I went for and can now easily pick up a dozen of these for £15 so nice and cheap, if I want to play with a brand spanker I can get a dozen new ones but it really doesnt matter they all look he same after 9 holes.

Just think about why you like youre current ball and if you can find it in another ball.

I tried the new TM Penta 3 and was suitably impressed. Firm without being a rock off the putter but some good control on irons and wedges. I do agree though that the Cally Jaws are going to mash most premium balls regardless of make

Taylormade Burner TP is a great ball. Soft feel but quite durable. I usually get a couple of rounds at least before they get consigned to the "practice cupboard". Using a Z-TP wedge for lots of shots shredded the AD333 I used to use.
I tried the Bridgestone e6 last week and it's another beaut ball.
