Which Club manufacturer shall I choose?

Morning all

I've decided to go along to the London golf show on Friday night and want to book a 30 minute session to be "fitted" for a 3 wood. Cost is £20 deductible if you buy a club.

Unfortunately you have to pick the manufacturer that you want to test, which is a little constrictive....but then for £20 to have someone look over my swing and give me some feedback I'm happy to take a chance.

The list of options are:

Callaway
Cobra
Mizuno
Nike
Ping
TM
Titleist
Yonex
Wilson

I had the Covert 3 wood earlier in the year and didn't get on with it. A Mate part ex'd his Cobra S3 Max 3 wood with me....which is ok but doesn't "feel" right.

so which manufacturer would you choose and why?

Cheers all

Adam

Pretty much personal preference, sounds like you have discounted Nike already to complete the bag.
TM for me the stage 2 RBz but that said SDLR is supposed to be longer!?
Also depends what your main use is alternative off the tee or long approach.
And don't forget Adams.

My course demands the 3 wood off the deck more than off the tee...... I've heard great things about the stage 2.

Titleist, quality kit and won't be out-dated by a newer model before you receive your order. Holds value well and looks good in the bag for years rather than months.

Titleist, the 913F is a quality 3 Metal, the Callaway X-Hot goes a country mile, but it does have a longer shaft than other 3 Metals, the new red headed Nike is a lovely club as well.

If it were me I'd go for the Titleist, but it's your money and your choice, go with your gut, or with whatever shiney catches your eye the most when you get there.

To be honest I would not bother if I was you. If you have to go there and pick a random manufacturer to be fitted for then I would go elsewhere. The correct 3W for you is the one you hit the best, not what someone tells you on a forum. Unless you can go somewhere that has a range so you can hit some first then stay well away from getting fitted like this.

You have already said you do not like the Nike 3W that you had, so what was wrong with it. Going to the golf show and just picking a manufacturer and getting fitted for them is a waste if you do not know exactly what 3W it is you want. If yuo are not careful you could end up with the same situation you had with the Covert.

I changed my 3W a few months. I had the TM Superfast 2.0 TP, so thought getting the RBZ Stage 2 3W would make sense. Well I hate it and regret letting my old one go, so just be careful and do not disregard any of the manufacturers until you have tried them, I wish I had.

MadAdey is correct, your best option is to find somewhere you can try several makes and models out. Last time out for me I tried 7 different makes, whittled down to the 3 best and then started to fiddle with lofts and shafts and got it down to one which was then fine tuned for me.

When going for a fitting it's always best to go in with no preconceived ideas of what club you want and then buy the one which worked best for you.

Yeah, I would go to my local pro shop / AG etc and ask to hit as many 3 woods in each manufacturer I could. From that you can whittle it down to one that feels right and then try that if you want to.

be aware several people have reported problems get a decent flight off the deck with stage 2. fantastic off the tee though.
new adams has smaller had a look over weekend been designed for fairway use more than tee shots.
another thought would be a 3H to go with your 4?

others ideas of an independant fitting would be best.

I will say this only once...............

DO NOT BUY THE STAGE 2 RBZ IF YOU WANT SOMETHING EASY TO HIT OFF THE FLOOR!

I am one of the several people that have said about the low ball flight from the deck. Trust me it does go a long way and straight but it does not go very high and that is coming from someone who naturally hits a high ball flight.

thanks for input all.... I've had the 3 hybrid of the covert tour but couldn't hit it, which is strange as the 4 hybrid is probably my 2nd strongest club in the bag. Thanks for the tips on the RBZ. I agree with you all re trying manufacturers....I've got in contact with the show to see if they'll do a multiple test for me, if not then money is staying in my pocket.

You could certainly see a difference when you tried my 3 wood at the weekend.

Back to the OP, if I had to choose just one from that list and I would probably have to opt for Ping just because I feel that they have a good variety to heads to fit most needs and so there is more chance of there being one that suits.

Which shaft do you have in the STAGE 2 RBZ?
Is it the Rocketfuel? what weight shaft?
I am a low ball hitter and don't get on with the Titleist fairway woods because the flight is too low (regardless of shaft), but I now have a STAGE 2 RBZ with Rocketfuel 70 shaft and it goes well.

It is the Rocketfuel 70g. What loft are you using in yours? Mine is the TS-13* set to 14.5*.

I have the same shaft in 14.5* head with standard setting.
The old 910F 3 wood I had was 13.5* and was good off tee but I couldnt get enough flight from the deck.
I had the R11S 14.5 in the past but that spun too much and went too high, but the STAGE 2 RBZ seems perfect for me, although it won't be as long as the 13*, it is long enough and good distance gap to driver, I have found the TS's sometimes go too far (almost driver length).

Not really sure if this is right but perhaps the TS-13* head is significantly lower spinning head compared to 14.5*?
I havent hit the TS-13 so cant comment! Have you tried the 14.5 head?

No I have not. It is a monster from the tee, especially in the wind as it goes lower. But I hit my driver just as well and further so I thought I would put the loft up and just use it as a 3w

I'd go with a 2 hybrid over a 3w if it's for hitting from the fairway. Might not be as long but much easier to hit IMO.

+1 for the original RBZ, driver(s) is/are on the naughty step just now, the 3 wood is as long off the tee, use the 3 hybrid off the deck.
