Was talking to one of our family doc and she asked me to cut down on carbs and add some proteins. However, she was cautious about running to the gym and buy Whey Proteins - as they have steroids and sweetners. Anyone using Protein/Whey supplements that does not have loads of additives

why not just eat more chicken and protein rich food? much better than supplements, especially as after reading your docs post last week, you don't want whey protein for the typical gym/weights person..

Whey protein definitely doesn't have steroids in it, it's just a by-product of making cheese I believe, which is used to increase muscle growth after exercise. I remember at school we were told that a modern diet already has plenty of protein, and protein supplements are just overkill. It's probably just best to eat a bit more meat, particularly chicken and other lean meats.

Personally, I think all of these gym-freaks who are taking all of these protein supplements will end up with liver failure or something in 50 years time. I went through a gym phase when I was about 16, and hammered the supplements, but did get quite big. Too many lads just seem to want to get as big as possible, so they look good on a night out on the town, and that's what put me off bodybuilding.

I bet those on juicing diets need the new livers first!

Many years ago when I was doing serious weights all I used to use was egg whites (not the yolks they are pretty much just fats), cottage cheese and chicken breast meat as my protein supplements. Other than that it was lean meat, vegetables and plenty of them, bananas before I trained and fruit juice for a sugar boost while I trained.
Even though there were many supplements on the market then I didn't use any of them and managed to be 16.5 stone with 10% body fat at 6" 1' I looked good. :ears:

A serious RTA and over 2 years to recover properly I didn't get back into weights the way I had been before.

Protein supplements are just convenience for a quick shot of protein when needed (i.e. for muscle recovery after work outs) but shouldn't replace eating meat, pulses etc.

They most certainly don't have steroids in, so she clearly has no idea what she's on about. The flavoured powders have sweetners additives in to make them palatable. You can buy pure, unflavoured whey, but it's absolutely impossible to drink without gagging. I used to have a post-gym breakfast milkshake which contained unflavoured whey, vanilla ice cream, porridge oats, spinach, milk and peanut butter - even with all those added flavours, the taste of the unflavoured whey was still really noticeable!

A good quality whey powder (myprotein.co.uk do some good ones and SciMx stuff is pretty good and contains less crap) is fine to use in moderation to get a bit more protein in you, but as has been mentioned, more chicken, beef, eggs and pulses will see you right also.

My favourite whey protein was MET-Rx. The strawberry flavour when mixed with milk tasted exactly like McDonalds milkshake. The banana was pretty nice aswell. Nutrisport strawberry whey was utterly gag-worthy. I had to hold my nose to drink it, but most people usedto mix Nesquik powder with it.

Apparently BSN make the tastiest supplements, but they are quite expensive.

Like said, they are called "supplements" for a reason, ie to supplement your diet, and to replace aspects of your diet which are difficult to get. We don't have the time or money to eat a whole
chicken per day.

I use Impact whey protein from MyProtein.com 5KG of Vanilla costs around £57 so value for money... 23g of protein per serving, Job done

protiens dont have steriods in! you can get some that contain high amounts of calories which are used for bulking up. Whey isolate is normally pretty good and it is a very easy source of protein you can get them with out sweeteners but the taste suffers because of that!

Other easy protein sources things like tuna (go for chunks in brine rather than oil) plus it contains the good fats and oils, bison meat contains more protein gram for gram than most meats but it isnt cheap, grilled skinless turkey breast, eggs including the yokes and you can get some really good jerky's

If your not training the only reason you would want whey protein is for cost and convenience. A chicken breast contains 20/30 grams of protein and would cost around £2. However, 25 grams of whey costs about 50p (depending on brand)

Sainsbury's and Tescos now sell suppliments, and are often trying to out-do each other on prices, current fav is the USN premiun strawberry cream, i get it in bulk whenever there is a "price war" in effect

I very much doubt ANY whey protein powders contain any form of steroid. Although linked heavily with body building, they are also associated with athletic, football, rugby and many other sports which have anti doping and drug use policies.

If you looking into the protein market, have a look at Whey Isolate varieties.

Isolate generally cost more than standard whey supplements as it's harder to produce, but on the whole is better, has less additives in it and has a higher bioavailability than normal whey. These guys have always been good when it comes to high quality supplements:

I do however agree with those advocating getting the additional requirement from food.
