Hi guys, looking for some inspiration, got 6-8 people ready with holiday booked to play golf next fri for my birthday (hint hint...)

Can anyone suggest a nice new course for us? Played all of the Newbury ones, didcot ones, test valley, Marlborough.. Any suggestions Bracknell, reading or Basingstoke way? Max drive 1hr from Newbury and a club that will take 2 four ball non members in the morning...

Thanks virtual old dudes!

Is Old Thorns in Hampshire too far for you to travel (Its Liphook?) I am due to play there next week on a winter warmer - I havent played there before but am due to play the Trilby tour there so need to get a look! They are doing tea / coffee, 18 holes and a one course meal for £30 - I havent heard much negative about it?

Will check it out, looks a trek though, just due to our rubbish road network! Sounds good value though! Thanks!

Near Basingstoke you could try Weybrook Park or nearer to Reading there is De Vere Wokefield Park.

Will check weybrook out, ta! Had some not great reports on wokefield from mates dad who played an away match there, happy to be told otherwise! (as I have a free Marriott voucher!)

I have only played at Wokefield Park once and that was during the summer. The course was in decent condition as were the greens. Could not comment on what it is like at this time of year.

Weybrook was on temps today (first time in 2 years from my memory), but that's just due to the thaw after the snow. Should be back to normal tomorrow.

Should be fine tomorrow and so no issue after that, and they will take visitors in the morning. Can't remember what the visitor deal is at the moment, but they do a round and meal deal for a decent price over winter.

Hope you enjoy it if you go.

I always find Wokefield park a bit of a slog although it is a nice course.

Basingstoke way the obvious one is Basingstoke which I reaaly like. Also try Sandford Springs 27 holes with 3 very different 9s.

Reading area try Calcot, very nice old Harry Colt course on the west side of Reading about 2 mins from M4 Junction 12. If I had to recommend one this would be it.

Dummer golf club just outside Basingstoke is an exelent winter course, no mud, no temp greens and no mats and the rough is nice and short at this time of year for the odd misshits!

Except that half the course is closed during reconstruction work.

I played Dummer before Xmas, only the 18th was really affected by the work, It is a pretty good option, others would be Bowood or Castle Coombe in Wiltshire both cracking courses or if you can make it as far as Winchester you could probably get on Hockley or Royal Winchester on a Friday morning

We have a company membership at Sherfield Oaks so I've played there a lot. 2 x 18 hole courses, usually well kept,, easy to get to and reasonably priced. Not the most spectacular of layouts, a bit up and down in places but still enjoyable. The Waterloo is the most interesting course of the two, the Wellington is longer.

Bowood is a lovely course and not too far from Marlborough. I'm sure they would accept two four balls in the morning.

You could try my old club Reading, near Emmer Green, although the valley holes may be a bit wet. You could play at my current club for £27.50 at the moment, and the course should be dry. We have a member who lives in Newbury although I am not sure how long it would take.

Take your wellies with you, it can get very wet.:mmm: Oh and have a word with Smiffy.

A couple of decent holes, (the 3rd being the pick of them), but that's about it as far as I'm concerned.
They are more interested in raking in the green fees than closing the course when it is unplayable so a big "no no" from me.

This time of year Ogbourne is not a bad track to play as it always drains well. 5 mins from Marlbrough and a good test of golf as a bit up and down and some blind shots.
