Hi all

Young man on my team at work is leaving soon and part of the leaving present will be a bottle of either McAllen or Talisker whisky. Now, not being a man who really drinks - where the hell do I buy it from? Are there any do's/donts when buying whisky?

thanks

Adam

Any decent off licence will sell them. Is that the whisky that the fella drinks? Some folks can be particular about their malts.

yeah, its either of those names.....

Generally I'd say the local supermarket is probably the best bet. They all tend to stock a good selection of the basic 10/12 year olds for around the £30 - £35 mark. Most also discount one or two by as much as £10 so you may get a good deal. If you are looking for more expensive/specialised products then whisky shops are in bigger towns and cities (but tend to be top dollar) and there are plenty of online sellers. As with everything, shop around.

There are some offers on promoting the newish Talisker 'Storm' single malt, but I would avoid that one. It has a funny salty after taste. Stick with plain Talisker, which is delicious :)

Thanks for that Ian I was thinking of buying one. I like the 10 year old.

OP Asda is usually the best/cheapest place.
If you wanted something unusual go to the independents.
You will not go wrong with a 10 year old Talisker or Macallan. £32-£38.

As for don'ts..........don't touch Tobermorey with an extremely long barge pole.
They say there is no such thing as a poor whisky but they left this one out.

Nice to see a 'novice' get the whisky spelling correct!!

I agree with the Talisker Storm its one of the few malts I didnt like. Most of my purchases are done in the supermarkets and theres nearly always a deal to be had if not then as everyone has said online is worth peruse if you know what you are looking for.

Yes agreed, Tobermory is one for avoiding too - shame as it is a lovely place.

My rules are don't buy Bells or any other heavily advertised blended whisky and do buy a nice Islay Malt such as Lagavulin, or Ardbeg Uigeadail.

This won't help, but a bloke at work is really into his whiskey, buying up bottles to store as they increase incredibly in value. He pays say £50 a bottle buit before you know it, zooooooom, the stuffs doubled in price!!!!

Second part of the advice I totally agree with.

If you are looking for a special present, try Master of Malt; very wide choice and you can also get personally printed labels, and very quickly delivered.

I did actually get the Ardbeg from them and it was a special present for my birthday from the Mrs. :D

How about that for serendipity. Whatever that means.

some steep prices there guys ,I can get macallan or highland park for £16 a bottle .... perks of working for the company

Id try the supermarkets they always have specials on.

oh and is there anything more annoying than whisky being spelt whiskey!!
