Afternoon all.
Just sitting here having a coffee on my lunchbreak and have been humming and hawing about my 3 wood.
Now the ring is I was always a decent woods player. More because I struggled with the driver and played a 3 wood for years when I first started learning the game.
But lately and I'm sure it's technique based or even swingspeed based I only seem to get decent results from the tee.
I can get maybe 3 times the height off a tee than I can from the fairway or a decent lie in the rough.
My driver swingspeed float between 100-105mph so it's probably a little above average but it also enables me to be able to play regular or stiff shafts.

I've got a mix in my bag. Currently my 3 wood is a RBZ with a regular shaft.
Sunday was a decent example. Our index 2 I hit 3 wood from the tee. A nice high towering fade. It ran off the fairway to leave me 205mtrs into a back pin. So as it was clean and place I was able to tee it up nicely on a cushion of grass. Maybe not as high as on a tee but at least a half inch off the ground.

Same set up and swing produced a shot half the height of my tee shot but it pitched abdout 10mtrs short of the Pun and ran out the back of the green and I had an up and down from the rough to save par.
If it came in with height is have held the green.
Now from that distance to hit the green at all was a decent achievement but I wonder is it time to ditch it for more loft and maybe a 5 wood. I doubt the resultant loss of distance would be much and I would think it would be an easier club to hit for the fairway too.

What are your toughts.

I had the same issue and swapped my 3 Wood for a HL version which is at 17 degrees - don't lose any distance but can get more height with it helping t land softer

Have you been on a launch monitor? Do you know if you're hitting down on the 3 wood or not?

I decided to add a 3 wood to the bag, but after experimenting and having a fitting with Callaway, I got WAY better results out of a 4 wood. So easy to hit and launches ridiculously high when hit well.

3 wood has saved me off the tee but I rarely hit it off the deck, go to club is the 5 wood, nice high flight and not much distance lost versus 3 wood.

5 wood is my fav club and is a dirty ping that can not be beaten by anything that matches the rest of my clubs! Its my go to club!

Love my TM Burner 3 wood off the tee or deck but your right you can get different ball flights.

It probably will be due to your set up as they will be slightly different from tee to fairway however I find if I put the ball position more forward on the fairway and open my stance slightly and fade it a little I will get more height into the green as apposed to the tee where I will look to draw it slightly or duff it.:D

I think a 3 wood is a crucial club. It is the one that enables me to reach par 5's in two and have a safe option off the tee.

Everyone should strive to succeed with a 3 wood. It is potentially the longest club in your arsenal off the fairway so critically important in my view.

Persevere.

I'm not very good with fairways or hybrids.

Had 3 and 5 wood last year but was much more consistent with the 5 wood and only really used the 3 wood from the tee.

So I got the M1 17* 4 wood fairly recently and it's really easy to hit, and in real terms I've probably gained distance as I'm much more consistent with it over the 3 wood and slightly longer than my 5 wood.

It's a critical club for me off the tee as my driver is probably the weakest club in my bag, but I don't use it from the fairway at all. I have a 5 wood and 2 hybrids and those are my clubs from the fairway from a long ways out, the 3 wood is strictly for off the tee.

My 3 wood is my go to club off the tee but is high lofted at 16.5 degree so more like a 4 wood with bigger head and longer shaft.

I still find it hard to hit off the deck so rarely try

Don't carry one. Can't hit one off the deck and go to 3I for tighter driving holes so would never use it. My driver is 13 deg loft so virtually a 3 wood anyway I suppose. Prefer to have the extra wedge.

Is the RBZ the one with the speed slot behind the face?

If so I was told that some people have difficulty getting the ball airborne from the deck because, and this is how I was told (I have no evidence to back it up), the face effectively collapses at impact into the speed slot.

This was more so for those with slower swing speeds, but maybe angle of attack etc can have an effect.

Personally i'm fine with them, in fact at the moment i'm hitting mine as well as i ever have and have been using it off the tee as my driving is so crap at the moment. When i first started playing a struggled of the deck with one but learn to use it and i up until now just used it off the fairway and hardly ever off the tee.

Ive also a mate who is rubbish with one and has tried every brand and type going, he now used a 16 deg hybrid instead.... this is not for everyone though as he is a pretty good player being off +1

Fairway woods are massively important for all the lovely reasons stated above - find one that fits you. The 3-wood is ideal but depends on your ball striking - I use a 17° (4-wood) as I naturally hit the ball a bit low so it does the same job. Always found 5-woods a tad short off the tee.

I use a Nike VRS 4 wood 17 degree, fantastic club easy to use off the tee and importantly of the deck, would not leave home without it, ps the fubuki shaft which i have on this club and my driver and hybrids is quality

I love my 3w (Ping i25) but around my home course I very rarely get to use it. If I'm having trouble with my driver then I'll use my 3h which on all the holes at my place will still get me in range.

Only time I ever really use it is on some holes into the wind as I can keep it down more than the hybrid if I don't fancy driver off the tee.

The three par 5's I can get at them all with driver then 3w but there's so much trouble it's just not worth the risk.

I have a Great Big Bertha 3 wood but have it set to 16/17° rather than 15° , mainly because it's just a bit easier to get the ball in the air and it aids consistency.
I don't lose much, if any, distance.

Like I thought. There would be mixed opinions.😊
My angle of attack off the ground would be definitely down when hitting from the fairway. And I tend to set up on the tee to sweep it and I'm concious of hitting up at it.
See also is my distance. Because I use an 11.5 driver there's only 3.5 degrees between that and the 3W.

I carry the 3W about 195 off a tee.
Next club up is a Ping 20degree hybrid which goes for me about 185mtrs off the tee so that's why I'm thinking that the 5 wood maybe a better club off he ground. It should also give me the tee more yards above the hybrid.
My driver carry is 220-230mtrs.
