Basically i'm 16 and i had a regrettable 18 months away from golf. I came back and now im shooting +20-+25. But i was this good when i was 13 and was having lessons:mmm:. I stopped having lessons when i was 13.

I can drive the ball around 260-270
And normally tee of with my 7 wood, i hit this around 220 consistently.

How can i improve from here?
Is being a scratch player/ golf teacher out of the question?

I feel as if i need to practice 24/7, and have played around 90 holes in 7 days.
Cheers guys.

Practicing the wrong things can take you in a very bad direction. Have a lesson or two and ask what you need to work on. Clearly you have some info from the past but you must have your swing relooked at.

Oh and nothing is out of the question!!!

if you can hit the driver 260 and you shooting +20 then i would advise you to practice you approach shots from 160yards and in.

Cheers sounds like a good idea, il get lessons as soon as i can. And is there such thing as over playing?

I didn't play for a few years until I joined a club last year - spent all season tweaking my swing and following every tip from magazines/TV etc trying to get back to where I had been. But the fundamentals were wrong so I just got shonkier....

Eventually took lessons to get the basics right again so should be set to move forward now.

Purposeful practice is necessary for improvement but you need to make sure of the purposeful aspect.

Presumably your tee shots are hitting the fairways. They are certainly long enough at this stage. Your should now concentrate on your short game, pitching, chipping and putting. This sort of practise is sometimes easier to do if you have decent garden available, and putting may be practised indoors, on the carpet. There are also numerous practise tips and drills in GM. Good luck.

Yeah il work on it, although since i came back ( first week back playing after a year and a half) one day my short game will be poor the next day its awesome, same with approach shots and drives, maybe i need to practice practice practice for consistency.

Yeah will do, although the funny thing is when i was 10/11 i used to beat my golf teacher ( done some events on the challenge tour) in chipping competitions, haha. Now im awful, although i remember what i have to do, its just doing it which is hard.

If you are scoring +20/+25 and distance isnt your problem, either as mentioned its your approach play or more likely the control you have over your ball

Find out what the weakest part of your game is and work on it until its not the weakest part of your game anymore....then repeat the process

Ok, i'm dedicated enough to work on it 2-3 hours after i have played 18 holes, but is there such thing as playing too much golf if i where to do it everyday?

Yep, and with it comes overthinking and that is bad news.

Edit, I don't think you can overplay as long as you keep it constructive.

Okay so by that you mean don't just go out and play 18 holes twice a day but practise certain parts of my game, drills etc?

You need to practice with a purpose. Find the part of your game that you struggle with and put in the maximum effort in to getting the results you need. Don't just batter balls at the range but be precise with practice and focus on discipline and commitment on every shot.
Sometimes you can be making things worse by playing the course too much as you always concentrate on hitting specific targets and when you don't hit the green, for example, the frustration sets in and you then over compensate when you hit the next shot. A couple of hours of specific practice at the range can be much more productive than a couple of rounds at the course.

hello,,i think there is no such thing as over play as long as your fisically active, then play as much as you can ,,but make sure you work on the mental aspects as well ,,plenty of competitions then you will no what needs to be worked on in the practice rounds,,,the competitions wont bet you ,your good enough to be there ,,its the shots under presure, that you need to control when needed

compete as much as possible ,,you have age on your side

Playing all day everyday is just as bad as practising the wrong things. You need to work on the areas thats loosing you shots. Probably best to get a 9 hole playing lesson and let your Pro advise on where he thinks you need to work on.

Ultimately if your yardages are accurate and your hitting the fairways then mid irons thru to the wedges must be an area for attention. Also whats your putting like, many putts you dropping?

i believe my mid irons are my main concern, its the fact that i can hit a full 9 iron with ease, but struggle with a lazy 8 iron, i feel as if i cannot commit to shots which should be easy, as if i always have to swing fully, think its confidence...
and my putting, at the moment its hard to tell, its been up and down. but on average id say around 28 ish putts a round, and the greens here are not exactly huge ...

Personally I'd sit down with my club pro or teaching pro and discuss where you want to go and what you need to do to get there. It might be a 5 year plan but you need to road map it. Its easy to get wrapped up in trying to improve but take it frm me, if you stand there and work on the wrong thing it can set you back a long way. You need to mix playing and practicing up and get regular coaching to keep all facets of the game ticking over and to take you to the next levels. Other than that, short game, short game, short game. I've known some very mediocre ball strikers who were deadly around the green and so able to carry low single figures off with ease

Okay thanks for the advice, i will try and speak about lessons when some money comes in, which should be in about a week, would 1 hour 1on1 lesson a week be ok?
