Can somebody please enlighten me to what should happen in this situation?

Last month I was playing in a 4BBB. It was my turn to play a chip to the green. As I played my partner who was out of sight at the other side of the green and closer than me also played his shot to the green.

Unbelievebly the two balls hit each other on the green while they were both still moving. I know my partner was at fault for playing out of turn but to his benefit he couldn't see me nor could I see him.

What should we have done in this situation? As it was we just played from where the balls ended up as we had no way of knowing where the balls would have ended up. Was this the correct thing to do?
