When should you shout "Fore"?

You hit a drive and it's heading towards someone up the side of the fairway who is walking a dog, it looks like it's going to land 15yds left of him... do you shout?

10yds left of him?...

5yds left of him?...

only if it's straight at him?...

If it was a dog walker I'd shout "look out". He may not know what "fore" means. Seriously, 15 yards left just so he doesn't get a shock when it lands. Most people will not move but simply duck so there's little possibility of the person running into it.

Will shout if it's going in his general direction - sorry but you or I are not able to judge exactly what will happen to the ball both in the air or the reaction when it hits the ground.

No clever judgements to be made by player - ball heading even vaguely someone's direction you shout - a shout costs not a penny and you can call out as many times as you wish. And there are no etiquette considerations to take into account - just do it

If it's possible that it's heading any near where anyone might be, then yell!

Though if it's a dog-walker 'Fetch' might be more appropriate!

Shouting doesn't remove any liability for negligence btw!

I once lay down near a ball that landed a few yards from me in a notorious area for danger at one old club. Got the message across much better than after a previous incident where the offender took offence at my 'would have appreciated a "Fore"' comment!

I'm an 18 yard fore-shout man. Always have been.

he has not paid to be on the golf course, ergo no shout at all. if it hits him or his dug, then so be it...

What if he is on a public footpath within the golf course ?! Decisions decisions

It has always concerned me that we have footpaths on the Belton estate next to the course. These are certainly in range of a wayward drive. I would have thought that a couple of signs warning to be wary of golf balls or explaining what a shout of fore means would be essential but there is nothing

If the walker is on a public footpath and the dog is on a lead golfers are supposed to give them priority. So if a golfer hits a drive know the walker and his dog are near he is at fault - the golfer should at a minimum shout irrespective of how close the drive may go. It will not help in liability but it might mitigate.

If the dog walker is walking on the course then the position changes in favour of the golfer but its certainly not clear who would be held liable and whether shouting 'fore' would help. If the walker was in full view then I suspect the golfer would be on the end of the short stick!

I once came across a guy walking towards me up the middle of the fairway; briefcase in one hand and mobile phone in the other firmly clamped to his ear. He took no notice and walked past me while I stood on the TEE. Numerous dog walkers let their dogs run freely all over the course - they make good moving targets :fore:

A shout costs nowt!
Most players would agree that a precautionary shout warns others and the majority of potential victims generally acknowledge a timely shout.
Never fails to amaze me watching the pros blatantly choosing not to shout as their ball shoots directly towards the gallery.

Is this a genuine question? If my ball is in the vicinity of another golfer or passer by, I'll shout straight away. No other answer surely?

I'm trying to determine your definition of 'vicinity'. Do you shout from the tee at the top of your lungs if you can see the ball turning away from where he is, maybe to land 10yds left of him?
