So it's a nice day, you're in no hurry but the 2 ball behind obviously are.

1. Do you wait on a tee for them to catch you up and invite them to play off first.

2. While waiting to hit your shot into the green from the fairway and they're waiting on the tee?

3.Or do you wait till you reach the green, mark your ball step aside and invite them to play up?

Number two typically but there is never a bad time for good manners Bob! :-)

If it crops up, I like to hit our balls off the tee then wait for them to arrive and play off. Then we amble down the hole behind them whilst they play their 2nds and putt out etc.

As well as letting the one group through you also need to be mindful that there will be another group right up your chuff if you stand aside for an age whilst letting the group through.

2 Normally if I was passing them, or close enough I would invite them to play through when they're ready. The best way, I think, is to stand to the side, invite them to tee off when I'm already half way up a fairway. When they tee off I play my second shot then walk up, mark my ball stand aside and the following group play through.

That saves a little time as i'm playing my second shot and walking to the green while the guys behind are walking to their second shots.......unless the course is quiet.

number 1 is my first choice if possible, if theres time we tee off first and walk up with them then let them carry on, keeps play moving and everyones happy and we even get a chance to chat.

Whenever, as long as you keep playing until they've properly caught you up so you don't hang around waiting for them.... after you've hit your tee shot is a good time if they are then approaching the tee box. It's not unusual to play half a hole as a 6-ball, then they putt out first and run off to the next tee.

If we have a par 3 coming up and the course is busy we'll tee off then invite them to tee off as well. Walk up together and if by some miracle my ball is on the green, mark it and allow them to finish up and head off to the next tee while we finish up. If it's quiet I'd just wait on the next tee and let them get on with it.

What would you fellas do in this situation:

Ten 4 balls tee off after each other with a 2 ball putting their name down after the ten 4 balls.
We were the 10th 4 ball. The only point the 2 ball caught us was when we where being held up by groups infront. Wether that be for greens to clear or waiting to tee off. The Slow group was the 5th group. Should we of let the 2 ball through?

(I'm prepared for flaming)
If I was part of the 2 ball and knew the situation I wouldn't even want to play through to be honest. Youd be basically having to play through every group which would put me off more than just having a wait.

I don't really have a hard and fast rule. Whenever is best at the time. On a par 3 surely it would be better to just let them tee off and play out but on a par five it may be better to play to the green and mark up. I guess it depends on what is in front of you and whether there will be a wait for the two ball on the next tee anyway.

I like to play through by everyone teeing off at the same time and the 3 or 4 ball playing the second shots first, walk to the green and let the slower group hit their shots to the green. Then the faster group putts out and tees off.
If it is a 2 ball in a bunch of 4 balls I think personally waiting is the best option. Trying to play thru 4 balls only holds up the course for everyone else.

Ball looking is the worst offender on our course, it is not to bad but today was a4man team event. The amount of 4 people looking for balls was annoying. I am a firm believer in everyone hit their shots, then come back and help look for your fellow golfers ball.

Usually at the first reasonable opportunity. So could be all of the above.

Doesn't happen often as I'm usually playing as a 1 or 2 ball, so most of the time it's us getting let through.

But if we are caught by a 1 ball I'll usually offer them to either join us or play through.

When we play as a 3 or 4 ball, mainly in comps, it only tends to be when someone has to go hunting for a ball as most of the field is playing at a similar pace.

I think most people get called through when the group in front has lost a ball off a tee shot.
Of course they didn't hit a provisional so are determined to find it.
The problem then is if you call the group behind through, you have to then wait an age for them to tee off, then walk down to their drives then hit their seconds then chip on and hole out before you can play the ball you found 5 seconds after you called the group through.
And as we all know, after you call someone through, you aren't suppossed to play another shot until the group you call through have played and are out of range.
No wonder people don't want to call groups through.

I think you're probably right Bob.

In my case the only time I usually "need" to let anyone through is in that very situation. It's very rare a group behind actually catches us or we loose holes on the group in front.

It's only if we have to stop and look for a ball that the group behind gets into range, and it's pretty much always in a comp so nobody want's to play 3 off the tee. We are pretty good about hitting a provisional if there is a chance of a lost ball.

If it's not a comp we'll have a quick look and then just drop one and play from there.

Generally I call through on a par 3 either by letting everyone tee off then letting the faster group putt out or by teeing off, marking and calling the group behind through. The half way hut at the tenth is another good spot to call through as I can always take my time over my coffee whilst they tee off. To be honest, the half way hut tends to help spread out the groups and there tends to be far less of a log jam after that.
