prompted by Ben Richardson's thread re Wilson Ci6 and Di7 I did a quick search. Low and behold I found Ci6's advertised as 'new for 2006' and Di7's as ' available for customer demo October' (2006).
We know that with cars all that needed to be changed every six months to create the snob value was the registration plate. So just what was the massive technological leap that made Ci6's old technology in six months.
How many, and what, clubs are we writing off that are, and will remain, a da**ed good deal for some time to come?

There are plenty of people using older irons (often 10 years and older), and I am not convinced by new 'iron' technology, it is just a fashion thing. I change mine when I am bored looking at them.

Drivers I think go out of date every 2 1/2 years, although for the better player who doesn't need the help / forgiveness, not a lot has changed in the last three years.

My irons are from 1991 (guess) with replaced shafts/grips. If I don't hit 'em great it's me not the clubs!
My woods were old but I have seen the light, I rate the new stuff and will almost certainly update to the next thing now if I have the cash. Over a few years there is next to nothing to gain (look at ping g2-5-10 drivers) but over 5 say, yes I'm sure.

I am not sure Irons actually go out of date. The holy grail in golf is the booming straight drive (I should know, I only had ONE when J_F tucked me away) and with that in mind that is where manufacturers are focusing their attention. You will see good single figure golfers out there who are sh1t scared at the thought of changing to newer clubs. Titleist Vokey and Cleveland 588 are institutions in golf and always will be. If you hit an 8 iron 150 yds day in and day out WHY would you change your clubs.

I think its getting out of hand.

Take ~PING FOR EXAMPLE

FIRST THE G2's
Then the G5's
Then Raptures
Then G10's

All a beginnner/improvers iron feels like they come out one week after another thats my opinion.

Where as Titleist A TOUR PROVEN BRAND there clubs last longer before they get old and a new range comes out. Give it a couple of months then youll see the NEW PING G 100 or RAPTURE PLUS(Guessing a name) im sure there is minute difference between these models, perhaps it is a definite improvement but it does seem silly to me.
You dont see a new apple mac come out every week but you see a new pc every week. Because Apple are more devoted to quality as is titleist thats why they don't flood the market with new technology too often

Tiger woods he took ages to change from an ignite to a sumo and im sure he has used the same irons and putter for a long time too. Hes a true golfer he learns what he can do with his equipment till he can trust it.

Other tour pros chuck the new model in when it comes out ie two ball putters many on tour used them to get them popular for the market when they became established the tour pros used the latest gear. HAve there scroes changed ??? NO !

you dont need to spend hundreds every year on equipment just get the right equipment custom fitted for you then it should last you a long time !

the guy i played with yesterday 'Bill', bought his putter for 2 pound at a boot fair it looks like a bit off scrap I felt embarrassed as i got a 190 pound scotty cameron and he rinsed me on the greens. so it goes to show new gear every year is not needed.
Sorry for banging on but i got nuthin better to do at the moment so there!!!

How many iron sets have TaylorMade released in the last 5 years?

300's
320
360
RAC O/S
RAC LT
TP Combo's
TP MB's
r7
r7 draw
r7 cgb max
r7 TP
Burner XD

Wow, I can only remember a dozen sets in 5 years. That is saturation point if you ask me.

I agree with Floppy about the ping thing....

Then again, I don't like their gear that much. I think that eventually some of the manufacturers will shoot themselves in the foot with bringing new stuff that offers nothing new to their repeat customers....the long standing buyers will go elsewhere surely?

Dave

technology is old before you get it.
"the newest thing" is not released until it is cheap enough for people to buy it so the next thing is always waiting on the price to manufacture it to come down to a level affordable for the common man to be able to afford it.

I would agree with most on here, there is no need to upgrade very often.
clubs last years
If you aint getting good results then go get fitted for clubs at least you are sure in the knowledge you are using the right gear so the only thing left to do is practice then practice a bit more or you can always go and eh practice
