I've never had a lesson and I'm not sure if I want one.
I have seen lots of people that HAVE had lessons and frankly it looks like they simply wasted their money. Crap posture, throwing the club from the top, grip waaay too strong, hips sliding around like a figure skaters foot blah blah blah

Is it that most golfers are after a quick fix and don't really want to hear how poor their swing really is...and the pro's are too scared to tell 'em?

What's your take on golf lessons?

As with most things in life, I have had good experiences and bad. Bad lessons have basically seen a pro watching me hit balls for half an hour with a little guidance here and there.

Good lessons, as with my current pro, have been invaluable. Time taken to explain what I am doing wrong, swing adjustments made bit by bit with drills to help me set any changes, ample encouragement so as I do not go back to my old ways and sometimes a trip out from the pro shop to the first hole to see how I play followed by some tips when I get in. The results speak for themselves, last year handicap went from 27 to 27.4, this year since April and following lessons it has moved from 27.4 to 24.6 with a medal win, a second place and a fourth place and soon to break 90 I think.

Lessons are worth every penny if you are comfortable with your pro.

Oohh, you cynic.....

I looked crap before, and I don't look much better now.
What I do know is that I'd still be off 24 if I hadn't taken the plunge....
Some people have it, some don't. I don't but I'll keep trying and keep having lessons until I start to shoot mid-70s again, then I'll stop, again, and then quit for the best part of a decade again, then re-start again.....

Why do I do it? :)

Never taken a lesson and play off 23 in my first season in comps, unofficial its 15 after 2 years. A friend of mine played off 4 with no lessons in his life and I know many people who enjoy a good level of golf without spending on lessons.

Are you off 23 or 15?

23 as I have just started playing comps and got my cards in, but as you know comp golf is a world away from friendly rounds.

I played last season and entered all my cards on golfshake and got down to 15.

With a good teacher, its the best money you could ever spend. You will find not many pros without a coach!!! For a good reason I would imagine.
Pro's already KNOW that they need someone to look after their swing - and can take the criticism as they see it as constructive. Tell your mate on the course that his alignment is 20 yards right and he'll tell you it's 'cos he wants to hit a draw :)

There's 8 shots difference between friendlies and comps? Wow
Watch out. Someone is going to post 'you cant have 2 handicaps' soon.
Fore warned is fore armed :D

i have. but if im honast i cannot be bothered to press the caps lock button. will you be able to cope with that or shall i make a extra effort?

I use 23, play once or twice a week and enjoy my golf and no doubt over the season it should drop down to a level I can play at.

I have though booked lessons for my wife as she is a total novice, in fact the first is on Saturday. Played a few rounds with her last week and she enjoyed it.

I certainly dont tell anybody how to play the game and if anyone tries to tell me during a game I kindly refuse their offer. I will only listen to very low handicappers/lesson not just your normal job blogs even though they may have a point.

Yep, good points. Normally our games are pretty friendly and we discuss stuff like swings etc. Next time my friends say anything I'll tell 'em to get stuffed and if I wanted a lesson I'd have asked for one :D <wink>

I'd never listen to them anyway.. they have swings based upon aiming 20 yards right and then cutting across it enough to hit it down the left side of the fairway with a fade/slice :D hehe
