If you practice what is and how do you keep your motivation.

I practice twice a week sometimes 3 times but im beginning to wonder
why and ask myself why im doing it.

I am self motivated and enjoy practicing but what am I actually doing
it for this time of year.
No qualifiers now until March,no opens,no comps, cold wet courses.
I also know that if I don't practice come March I will be rusty and probably
would not have improved.

How do you motivate yourself and why do you practice?

To be honest, when heading to the range it is mainly for the social aspect as I like to have a laugh with the guys that work there as we're quite good friends. Over the winter is when any major swing changes take place, so I'm putting these into work and just hitting 50 or so balls to try and groove it in, as well as doing practice swings at home, against a wall!

to improve i hope, but I do enjoy hitting balls at the range anyway.

I like to practice at least 2-3 times a week with playing In between. My motivation is knowing that there is always someone better than me and that one day I can be that better person. For me there is always one part of my game that needs tweaking here or there for instance this weeks practice is bunkers. I just enjoy getting out and hitting balls. If I can perfect hitting balls of a sloppy dodgy lie in the winter how awesome will I be come summer time. That's what I keep telling myself anyway. I like having the confidence going onto a course knowing I can hold my own and not randomly spray it about which makes it so enjoyable to play. So practising makes playing more fun.

It's all about trying to get better although I do enjoy hitting balls at the range when I can't get out on a course.

Through the summer I focus more on short game, while doing enough to keep the full swing ticking over.

And I practice putting in the living room almost every day!

At the moment I am working on a few changes, notably a grip change and trying to improve my release. Shows promise in the shape of improved ball striking but has introduced an ugly hook as my bad shot. At this time of the year, however, it's possible to take a backwards step in the hope of making two forward by the time the new season comes round.

Over this winter I am focusing on my full swing and am working on a few major issues that are swing path and weight transfer. This is to improve my strike and consistency. Hopefully this will be engrained by next year for the start of the season. I will then focus on short game and putting over the summer months and not have any lessons on the full swing. I had a lot of problems last year where I had a lesson which seemed to make a mess of my swing and meant poor scoring on the course for a few weeks. I have also started to learn to love the process of improvement to stop myself from becoming frustrated if I feel my progress is too slow and keep me motivated.

i practise when i have had a bad round( quite often then!) if i have played poor i will be out on the practice ground or the range to try and put right faults i feel have crept in. Hopefully then when i go back out on the course i will have started to work out what went wrong last time or at least be back on the right path. :one:

At moment I'm practising least twice a week
Had a lesson couple weeks back and got one next Tuesday
Couple alterations then hopefully all clicks and I get back to cat 1 next season

a poor round will send me up to the range. not so much to work on doing the right things, just to understand and stop doing the destructive things.

1 range session a week these days. I used to go quite a bit a couple of years ago.

I occasionally practice my putting, which I enjoy, but very very rarely practice anything else. I'll do the odd practice if things are falling to bits.

Wish I could find some, I just don't like the range. Probably been about half a dozen times in my life. Went to practice area at Wishaw once in 7 years and hit about 20 balls. I have been on Lanarks practice range twice in 2 years, once when I got new irons and once with a new driver shaft.

I think practice is the only way I'll get any better but have no motivation to do it, I'd always rather play a few holes :fore:

I enjoy the process of hitting balls, figuring stuff out, learning about how I hit the ball and improving each element of my game. Probably practice more when I'm hitting it well to ingrain good habits. Ultimately, practice gives me massive injections of confidence to take to the course - that's no guarantee of anything but confidence is a cornerstone of the game.

I don't really enjoy going to the range, I did go a couple of weeks ago after a swing change at my last lesson to try and get used to the change, but other than those times I will only go if I haven't been able to get on to the course for a few days. I would much rather be practising on the course.

I rarely practice this time of year but I carry on playing in Winter so its not like I have a long break. I normally try to work things out on the course but if for ever reason I cant then that is when I would practice more. Practice is normally chipping and putting because this is the area that costs me most shots in a round.

Agony on the course = motivation for practice

As for driving range etc....absolutely none.

Do practice putting quite a lot in the summer as a) It's quite nice on our practice green in the sunshine passing an hour interrupted with a few chat's with various folk, and b) I can do this with a cold lager on the side........perfect relaxation after work.

I spend from October thru to March working through change with my pro.

Over this winter I'm looking at opposite ends of the bag (Driver and short game).

Short game is dramatically improved thanks to the changes, although still very much a work in progress.

Driver is taking a little more time, but then I've never been a brilliant driver of the golf ball.

To answer the question directly, my motivation is to become a better, more consistent player than I was the previous season.

I can't motivate myself at the moment and I won't lie to myself and say the cold and wet isn't keeping me indoors. More than that though I realised something last year, I went for my first proper golf lessons and my game improved dramatically. It was an instant hit. One "on the course" lesson and two range sessions, I was consistently playing to h/c through the changes and then I smashed my PB by shooting 78 in a medal. Unfortunately due to work thats the last time I played, August!

But what I realised is that my natural swing is full of faults and to go to the range now would only compound them. I'll wait til it isn't so miserable and start the year as I mean to go on, with focussed lessons and an improved swing to practice. Putting has let me down in the past, that's another area I intend to work on, again with the pro (I cut the ball apparently, grand if I'm in form, disastrous from 3 feet if I'm not in the zone).

When the time comes my motivation will be to embed the swing changes as much as possible so when I get on the course I don't have too much going on in my head during the swing/putt and I can concentrate on playing the game to a standard I'd love to play it to, allowing me to enjoy my golf as much as I do the company.

I could give a very long answer but I believe the actual reason I practice so much is that I think I might have forgotten what I learned yesterday so I go back to check if I have or not....
