What's to be gained from buying new irons?

I'm currently toying with the idea of getting new irons - I've got Mizuno MP60 just now having had them for about 8 years.
I'd love to be able to go and buy off the shelf and get loft and lie checked/adjusted but unfortunately I can't do it as I'm 6'5" so have to go to get custom fitted. So having not looked at irons for a number of years are there actual game benefits from updating to be had or are the irons just re designed to make them look more appealing?

Based on my sons recent purchase, the ball flies off the face further and they are more forgiving. Off centre hits still go a decent distance, on centre hits are sweeter and fly further. He went from an old set of Ping G5's to a new set of Callaway X-Series. If you get fitted then you can compare your current irons against any new ones. Any improvements, or not, will then be self evident.

I've just received my custom fit jpx 850 forged mizuno irons and the difference between these and my old Wilson staff di7 off the shelf irons are night and day. more controllable flight as the shafts are fitted for my swing and they look loads better too.

If you hit a decent ball already, then chances are you will see some improvement from more up do date irons. If you are struggling, then new irons aren't the fix. Tuition is.
But what the hell. New shinies are great, and if you can afford it, then why the hell not.

1. they look nice.
2. they wind up your mates when you pull out the latest gear
3. they give you confidence
4. they make you practice more
5. they hit the ball better
6. they reinvigorate your love of the game
7. don't we all just love buying new gear in any part of your life? (car, sports gear, clothes, TV's etc?)
8. just go buy some!

Haha and your friends wind you up when you top it, all the gear but no idea.

Hitting it decent just now - wouldn't mind comparing current set to new set in a demo day so might check that out.
Ping Eye 2s you thought about "upgrading"?

indeed - me more than anyone.!

I just shrug my shoulders and tell them the money is not an issue to me (it is, but they don't need to know that!) , that I've got more than I could ever spend (not true, but hey ho), and the look on their faces when I pull out the latest club is worth every penny!!

I found the Mp60 pretty unforgiving, so i would imagine any of the new Mizuno irons will suit.

I have thought about it, but I love the eye 2's and am hitting it pure at the moment. I can't see an upgrade improving my scores. If I did upgrade it would probably be something like the G20 irons, second hand of course. I did upgrade my woods to something more forgiving though.

I think you'll find a few changes in forgiveness especially given what you hit. I know it'll be harder for you being a tall man but nothing wrong trying a few makes if you can find somewhere that'll stock longer shafts for you. No obligation to buy
