On what basis ? This is a forum, not a constrained bit of group think

- often a most important time to let threads run , because this is when we individually and collectively have to look at our inner prejudices and views. And be open to change

Chris - i understand what you are saying, but that's a difficult/dangerous path to tread. Do "we" or GM give the Mods guidelines on when to close a thread ?
Forums live and die by the freedome they provide.
It is always a very emotive subject on other forums (fori ?)

When a thread is degenerating into insults then it requires closing. Nothing new was being said. Freedom of speech is not freedom to insult. Right decision.

So at what stage do you decide enough is enough? If you can give me a definitive answer then you are better than me a judging when to do it. It was plainly obvious the way the thread was going with the tone of the posts and I decided to lock it. No one else has said anything so I think it was the correct decision.

Chris - really difficult.
For what it's worthm base don some other forums i've been a long standing member of, you have to let it run, take off offending posts and let the thread either continue or die out.
You are on a hiding to nothing however, cos not all posters will ask the question as nicely as me
And, there;s the point that i was hinting at (nicel of course) , which is that a forum is a place for individuals with minority veiws to be able to air and debate them. In such situations, it is hard, but the Mods need to try to give the minority the ability to fight against the masses.
