As I write this I'm here taking a break from what I'm doing on the range......
There are about 14 poeple including myself but there's only 2 of us working on stuff.... The rest are just emptying baskets or balls and going through them like a machine gun..... What's the point of this... I can understand someone just wanting to get out of the house for a bit but surely a brisk walk would have more purpose..... There's a few telling each other what they should or should not be doing but then they take their turn and can't even get the ball in the air........ I can't make sense of what I'm seeing.... I understand practising to get better but they might as well have a shovel in their hands........ The mats are drowned wet from the weather but most are wearing trainers sliding all over the place.... It beggers belief....

Just because they dont have the same objectives and purpose as you doesnt make what thyey are doing wrong. They may well be having fun and that may be all that matters to them

Every range, every day. It is no different where you are. I see it all the time. I can spend 2 hours on 80 balls and I will always step off the mat after every shot so I don't scrape and hit if I have a bad shot. Add in the time rehearsing a shot, thinking about technique or even going through a pre-shot routine (trying to clear the mind over the ball for instance) and you can see how the time goes. Quality not quantity in practice. Makes me laugh when you see a guy get the big 120 bucket and he has done them all before I've hot maybe 30. I did ask one guy "did you get anything from that" He seemed to think rattling shot after shot, usually starting with the driver was a productive session. Each to their own

Know the feeling, I actually think last week was the most constructive session I've had at the range without supervision or tuition, pre shot routine, hit a ball, check the iPad to see the result.... Digest, repeat.

It's the first time ever that a bucket of 100 balls has lasted me almost two hours.

Quality not quantity

Wow. Golf snobbery to a new level from you and Homer here. Who are you to judge? If people want to rattle through dozens of balls, let them get on with it. There are those out there who have a life outside of this game.

I go to the range a bit. Sometimes with the best of intentions, other times just to get out the house. I'll do 70 balls in 45 mins, normally ends up like a machine gun....because the range is pretty boring. If the fella on the next mat was going through a pre shot routine ball after ball, I'd think he was a little bit of a knob.

The range, by definition, is for hitting balls. It bears little relation to the course.

Maybe they're having a bit of fun??

Crazy!!!!

I suppose that's what makes this game great, the spectrum of which it attracts.

What's commons (from my view) is "rattlers" will generally be at the range, hit either a consistently bad ball or an inconsistent mish mash of all sorts with little or no consistency. I think its different if your drilling balls to try and ingrain a swing change, but just gunning for the fun of it hitting bad shot oater bad shot cannot be enjoyable.

Fundy... Trust me pal..... I know the difference between someone that's having fun and someone that's not enjoying what their doing.... There wasn't many of these guys having fun... Especially when you can clearly make out the words coming out of their mouths after the ball has gone....

But it's only an odd lot like us on this forum that are serious about swing changes and the likes.

Loads of ranges are putting in different targets like cars, statues, tyres etc just for the machine gun rattlers. The ball collection truck still gets everyone's attention even when I'm deciphering my P2 from my P3!! :)

In your eyes they may not have been having fun, but doing it your way may have made it even worse for them. Try accepting were all different and do things different ways. Dont let what other people are doing have such an effect on you and drain your energy from you worrying about them, im sure theyll be fine, and you'll get more pleasure from your practise if you focus on yourself rather than the 14 others. All imho :)

One thing I am not is a golf snob my friend..... I left them get on with it.... At no point did I interrupt them...... I was just surprised at what I was seeing....

Maybe this is why people don't improve....

Believe me pal.... They weren't draining my energy...... I was having a break....

Perhaps they weren't looking to improve. Maybe they'd had a bad day at work and were picturing their bosses face on each ball and just trying to smash it. Or had a row with the other half and picturing their face. I'll quite often go and hit 60 or 90 balls on the range without a specific goal in mind. Just to be out with my boy, hitting balls and not having to think about work, money or anything important. Can be quite therapeutic to just swing a club and hit a ball without worrying about swing path/weight transfer/ball flight or whatever it is that decent golfers think about. But as others have said, each to their own.

I have no problems getting through 100 balls at the range in an hour. Stepping off the mat?! I reckon my brain is sophisticated enough to focus without doing so. People, including myself, enjoy wacking golf balls. Deal with it.

Why feel the need to take time out and judge them on here? This holier than thou attitude is pathetic. Maybe they're not looking to improve but just taking time out. How dare they. This kind of crap is starting to drive me away from this forum.

I'm off to smack 500 balls at the range in less than 20mins. BOOM.
