Member at my club will play anyone, for as much money as they want.(not less than £10)
He is a fierce competitor and plays off 7. He came over from Ireland 35 years ago with nothing, and is now a multi millionare.
Its not about the money itself, but the thrill of something to play for.
Most of the other members wont play him for anything over a fiver.
It seems that playing for money does something to people's game. When I play him he has to give me 20 (yes 20) shots, and it's an achievment when I get a half!

How much is the most you have played for, and why does playing for money take people so far outside their comfort zone?

Played a mate for £43.00 around St Mellion once.
Was down there on a golfing week-end and it was his half of the petrol money. Played him double or quits for it.
And lost.

My mate (20h/c) and i (16h/c) normally play a fiver for birdies and a tenner for eagles. Never had any eagles but generally we have 1 or 2 birdies depending on how we are playing. Fairly even most of the time but it does add a bit of fun/pressure over the birdie putts!

Played a mate for a pound a hole back in the seventies. my weekly wage at that time was about £26.
Thrashed him, won 15 holes and halved the rest.
In the end I did`nt have the heart to take his money.
How sads that.

Played a mate once in the late 80s for a tenner.

Not a lot of money to either of us, but it was a real pressure game.

The glory of him handing over the money in front of all our mates in the pub that night, and having to admit that I was the Daddy was one unforgettable moment.

:D

I've never played golf for money, but I played a pool match for £125 about 20 years ago.

Some people are good at it and some very good players just crumble with money riding on it. I won the match but I'm still not sure which type I am.
It's like having the pressure of a 6' putt to win a match on every shot right from the off, and you just pray that muscle memory takes over.

The most any of my mates played for (again pool) was £15k a man!!!

Played a guy for £50 following a drunken row in the local pub round the local pay and play. Got a fair gallery from the pub out too and I did him like a kipper.

One would assume he was still pissed?

Actually he was a real spanner. Thought he was a bit of a player down the pub because he had some cash on the hip, decent motor and knew a few tasty guys. Fancied himself as tasty golfer and I did him 6&5 and let him get away with numerous rules infringements just so I could rub it in after. Funnily enough he had the p**s ripped out of him for weeks after and decided to take up residence in another hostlery

£1, £1, £1.....

I might stretch to £2 if I'm in good form.

:)

I played 3 frames of pool once for more money that I had in my bank. My collateral was my car (worth a few grand)....

First game was tight, I pipped it.
Second game, I cleared all 8 balls from the break and then potted all the remaining 7 for a 15 ball clearance.

:) :)

Why did I quit pool for golf?

We play every friday for £10 a man stableford. Usually have around 3, 3 & 4 riding on the fourballs too with 50p bits.

I have played a game after a night out for £60 each and if I lost against either of them I had to get a tattoo. This was due to me ripping on them constantly for each of their several tats and they fancied getting me one.

Still ink free!!

Often put bets on over long periods of time with regards to wins or handicaps and do ok in most but definatly not all of them!!
