What's the effect of having the wrong shaft?

Hello,

I'm very new to the game and was kindly given a Callaway Diablo Octane 9.5 degree Driver which I cannot hit straight to save my life.

I have a course of lessons booked starting next week but just wondered what effect does having the wrong shaft have, the Driver has a Project X 6.0 Stiff Shaft.

It's more than likely something I'm doing wrong but still a bit curious anyway.

Thanks

Depends I suppose, how tall are you and how long is the shaft, it might be too long/short for you (if its wrong length its prob the former over the latter)

My old jpx 800 driver had a very whippy shaft and I couldn't hit it straight, it would always slice off to the right

Since I changed to my cally octane black with a project x 5.0 it's much much better

A hook is a hook and a slice is a slice no matter what shaft you have. The biggest difference a shaft will make is launch angle and spin rate

It will make a difference. But a shaft will not make a slice or a hook, but it will affect the angle of the face at impact making it a push or a pull.
I'd agree with that however, we are talking small amounts that would most likely still leave your ball in play. I played with a guy once that had a mahooosive hook. He said " i need to change the shaft in this driver"

I would defiantly agree that the shaft is not going to be responsible for a big hook. But If I hit a driver with a soft whippy shaft in I do hit a big high pull.

We do loads of reader fittings here at GM, and the shaft can make a huger difference in terms of both accuracy and distance, during your lesson get your pro to take a look, he'll be able to make a recommendation.

This is also correct, the right shaft won't correct a swing flaw, but it will optimise a bad swing to launch it more efficiently, like you say with a better initial launch and with more desirable spin.
