Anyone who has ever played with me or even listen to me moan knows I haven't mastered the tee off (massive slice) It's a fact!

ive had lessons galore, millions of pps tips (all greatly appreciated) watch youtube, tips off of here (again appreciated) even videoing myself, all to no avail.

However.... Recently in one of many experiments with the 17 hybrid I placed it forward in the stance, opened the face to maybe 1-1.30 o'clock hands a touch forward and hey-oh I'm up the middle. Varying degrees of distance ranging from 170-220 but always on the fairway. This method ONLY works for this club off the tee.

So already I have two swings, added to that when I'm using 8-sw I cock my wrists early in the swing else I hit everything off the toe... We're upto three, but it's working. Handicaps down 3 shots, I won the July medal and had a couple of 2nds in the midweek.

I know this will only get me so far before the wheels come off, but I'm gonna stick with until it does.

so to the point of the thread 1, anyone else mad enough to employ such tactics? And 2, how low you think this method can take me?

a huge number of golfers use the 'what works for me' approach

most don't even think about it

less than 1% ever have a single lesson so they never know anything else!

Surely if it works for you then its right for you ?

Im always of the opinion there is no right way but multiple different ways with one being the right way for you

I reckon it could be more than 1% have never had a lesson but thats just a wild guess :D

I have a unique swing but under a good teaching pro and a lot of hard work I understand it now, why it works and why the bad shots happen. It'll never be textbook but it's now repetitive and functional. If it works, use it although I'd be questioning why lessons aren't working and asking the pro for more feedback

lessons ruined me! Yes they gave me better understanding but it just wasnt natural. I am now going back to what worked and using some tips off Shawn Clement

Sod hitting this position or that position. Hit balls with what worjks. I wont ever be on TV so dont care if it looks nice. Aslong as it works

as for hopw far it can get you.... how far do you want to go? Obviously only hitting 170-220 off tee's is going to limit birdie chances so maybe mid to high teens aka bogey golf (with the odd par thrown in) :)

I had a similar problem for a year or two when I started out Dave.

I just couldn't hit anything off the tee without a massive slice and the harder I tried the worse it got.
The problem was though I was taking the club back on the inside thinking that it would return to the ball on the same path, hopefully giving me something at least little straighter or even a draw.

It found though by doing this it always comes back through from the outside across the ball causing the slice. I think the reason being its just physically difficult to take it back on the inside and then keep the downswing on the inside.

I eventually cured it by doing the opposite, swinging the club in a fashion similar to Jim Furyk..

I took the club back on the outside, then giving myself lots of room to drop the club on the inside on the downswing. It cured the slice instantly.

Its not exactly textbook and I'm no expert mate but it certainly worked for me and gave me a feel for a correct swing path coming into the ball on the downswing.

Good advice from one of the straightest hitters I know.

The best teachers will listen to what you want and the very best wont work on positions because there are no positions in the swing apart from the setup and finish.

rory does it too! 2mins 49secs

I played in a national event with a guy who had the most unconventional setup, grip and swing. Quite frankly, it looked horrendous.

But he played off +2

Got to be a moral for us all in there somewhere!

The only part of the swing that matters is that split second at impact. The ball does not care how you got there. So as long as it's repeatable go for it.

I had something similar where for a few months I played with an closed clubface. I was spanking the ball and getting really good distances and accuracy. Then all of a sudden, a dirty slice appeared and it was a problem for a few months....

My pro got me swinging a lot more conventionally and now I'm playing a lot more confidently and hitting those distances with a straighter ball flight. Happy days!

I played with a guy at Doral who was doing just about everything wrong when he was pitching/chipping. But he didn't miss a green from within 150 yards. Unlike me who didn't miss a bunker.

Just do what works and as long as that ball is on the fairway form most drives and green mostly in GIR then it's working. Whatever you are doing.
