If there were no dress code rules in golf, what would you wear to play in?

I pretty much wear a polo shirt and shorts all the time so no real effort to wear the same for golf.

I did wear jeans at a little local 9 hole when i started playing (not blue jeans,s I might ad more or a cord type) but i found them the most uncomfortable thing to wear and the bottoms of them stayed soaking wet if you went in the rough, in fact the damp soaked further up as you went round.

Personally I think this poll is scewed to give you the results you want. The only possible answer is A so for this reason I won't vote. It doesn't have to be extremes, shorts or trousers with pockets on the side are perfect for golf but many clubs seem to think you'll rape the bar staff if you turn up in them!

No it's not. You choose whatever you want.

Only issue I have with current dress code is when you get some idiot telling you to tuck your shirt in.
And not allowing shorts with pockets on the side. Stupid rule.

Golf shirt and shorts for me every time. Even in winter it's shorts under the waterproofs. Some of the shorts would be classed as 'cargoes' at certain clubs but not had a problem yet.

Having lived in NZ where the dress code is relaxed I played in shorts pretty much for 9 months of the year, tried jeans and tracksuit bottoms when colder but went back to good old Farah's or chinos as they are just some much better to play golf in.

I'd wear pretty much what I wear now.
I would find jeans very uncomfortable to play golf in.

Our course has a "no cargo pants" rule.
I've seen really nice tailored shorts that would suit Mr Mimms but the rogue outside pocket might be acceptable.
So they might creep in if there were no Dress code, as long as they are not the ultra baggy ones with pockets large enough to stow a carp in

I'd stick with what I have. It's comfy and functional and like others have said on various dress threads I like to feel and dress like a golfer even when I don't actually play like one much of the time

Why would anyone ever want to wear anything but proper golf clothing. It is designed to move with your swing and keep you either cool and sweat free in summer clothing, or warm and dry in winter.

But I do agree with the earlier statement with regards to choice of answer. You have basically said you would wear the current generally accepted dress code, jeans, or a mankini and flip flops. But even if you put other options up I would choose clothing specifically designed for hitting golf balls in.

it would be nice in teh summer to just turn up an play a few late holes without the need to change into full golfing regalia and just wear what ever it was i had on at the time, be that jeans and a tee shirt or whatever.

We don't have a strict dress code at our club but members are expected to dress for play when in a competition or match which is well adhered to and it's nice to be able to pop up to the club in the evening and go out in something less formal for a few holes.

I would wear normal golf clothes but would like to see a relaxation on many clothing issues. Shirts can be untucked, the colour of socks with shorts is irrelevant. Does it really matter if my shorts have a cargo style pocket on the side if they are still smart? Jacket and tie required in the clubhouse? No thanks.

All of the above is very simple but would still keep an overall smart, golfing look.

I would wear a non-collared shirt, not tucked in, possibly sleeveless, designed for golf - oh sorry, that's what ladies are allowed to wear so that can't possibly be allowed for men, I must be a grass digging-up chav were I to wear something as outrageous as that. Silly me.

In that case I would wear some shorts in the summer months, and I would make sure they had some pockets so I could keep me tees, ball marker and spare ball (don't want to be accused of slow play by having to go back to my bag). Oops, sorry me, I'll be swearing and drinking beer on the course because my pocket was sewn on the outside.

I'd better wear trousers then. Oops, the weave of the cotton appears to be a double-weave textile, so even though they are pale brown, clean, with pockets on the inside, apparently that makes me a denim-wearing hells angel.

Sorry sorry sorry,

At least my golf shoes are proper golf shoes. phew. they are made by Adidas have no spikes, are lurid green and yellow, and look exactly the same as the trainers that the local hoodies wear hanging about outside Sainsburys, but thank god I've got something right at long last :)

But silly me, I should know the "rules" so I had better take my middle class, professional, good role model behaviour down to the local muni where I can rightly associate with the other people of my ilk.

A Mankini, ohhhh I shudder at the thought. Like others have said golf gear is designed for golf, it is, if you will the golfers uniform, our strip. You wouldn't see pro tennis players out in levis, imagine the premier league sporting the latest Vivienne Westwood Punk Zip pants.

I'll stick with the smart troos, polo shirt, as long as they are green :D

On the course I would wear normal golf gear. The onky change would be in summer when I may wear cargo shorts simply because most low priced, comfy, easily obtained shorts these days are cargo shorts

In the bar I woukd wear jeans, converse and a rugby shirt as that is what I wear everwhere else
