What would you do in Richart's place?

Played a semi-final knockout match at my club against a 4.3 handicap. He advised me he played an Open event at another Club the day before, and shot two rounds over handicap. He told me his handicap was therefore 4.5, i.e 5 not 4.

Instead of getting 6 shots I got 5. It had no affect on the result as I got stuffed, and the only hole I won was stroke index 6 !

Is he right ?

Clearly, he's not allowed to increase his own handicap and as per rule 6-2 he should be dq'd.
What would you do, bearing in mind the circumstances and that he played like a knob? ;)

explain the correct rule to the opponent then wish him well in the next round

I'd report it and let the committee sort it out.

Off 4.3 and playing in 36 hole away comps, he should and, possibly, did know better.

Semi-final match - I'd report it to the committee and ask for a ruling. The rules would seem to be pretty clear cut. Had it been the first round and I'd played badly and lost then fair enough but with a final place for grabs I'm afraid I'd be a bit more hard nosed.

Bit of a double-edge sword for me. Technically the other guy has broken the rules ans should dq'd but would Young Rich want to get to the final having not played well enough to win....?

On balance I'd get the Committee involved and leave it at their door.

surely it's cheating. Just the same as any other form. Report it to the committee, let them make a ruling. I think I’m right in saying ignorance is no defence

I would maybe consider refusing a place in the final if it was offered. For me it wouldn't be about progressing, just making a point.

Id highlight it with the commitee but id also leave it go and let them deal with it...

I was beaten well but i still walk away proud in the knowledge that i played fair..

Its in the commitee's hands after that but i wouldnt like to be the one that progressed through a D/Q if i played poorly...

How do you go up 0.2 in one day, anyway? If his handicap hasn't been changed by the committee, it stays as 4. He is a cheat and he knows it. Report him and YOU move on to the next round. He should know better, he's supposed to be a good player.

Showing my age here, but when I was Cat 1 (Many moons ago) your handicap couldn't go up until the end of the month. I take it this has changed with the use of 'puters?

Why not leave it at the committees door, but as a compromise rather than see him kicked out ask if it can be replayed. If he beats Richart again then fair enough and if Richart prevails the guy hasn't really got any comeback as he's got a second chance he shouldn't really have anyway. Seems a win win

Is what I would do :)

If it had no effect on the result then let it go. If he's have been 1/2 strokes adrift of winning then maybe argue the toss and raise with the committee.
As its match play im with Matty on this one .. strokes you would have to report it , i agree with the guys this seems an experienced competitive golfer , he should know ..

Reading Bob's OP it sounds like Richart's opponent told him about the .2 increase before they teed off. If that was the case then I'd say Richart should've queried it then and stuck to his guns. You can't put your own handicap up.

It's up to both players to know the rules.

I was always told to get the handicaps sorted on the first tee and then it's game on.

If on the other hand he said on the first tee that he was off 5 and only later explained about the .2 increase then I'd say he should be DQ'd.

He wouldnt have played off 5 if he was playing me cos i'd have known the rule. He was being a chancer imo and should be told the correct ruling for this situation so he doesnt make a *** of himself in future. He could then decide if he was man enough to d/q himself from the final or maybe offer Ricart a rematch if Richart would accept this compromise.

Would a rematch be allowed under the Rules....?
The Rules clearly state that starting with a higher handicap than you actually have results in DQ...

Can the Committee sanction a re-match....?
