I've narrowed my choice and am waiting for a break in the weather to have a wander round them.
I'm forming my own idea s about what I want, but wanted to know what you considered must haves or avoid at all costs?

Cheers
Rich

Here goes , Is the course easy to get too , what condition is it in , what are the clubs plans in the future as this will reflect on your golf subs in future years , are there any roll ups , can anyone join or are they close shops , who you going to play with if you cant get in the roll ups , can you get in on the medals , is the course busy with societies , are there little loops you can play when you fancy only a few holes , do they do nice food at a good price and do they stock your type of beer ..................hope this helps , oh forgot , what are the practice areas like if thats your thing

Difficulty and challenge of the course, including conditioning (wet in winter?)
Drawn competitions
Club matches (competitive and friendly)
Ability to get regular social games (roll ups)
Travelling distance
Ease of playing (booked tee times, busy roll up periods)
Atmosphere in the 19th
Practice facilities
Pro and pro shop (including tuition)
Condition of the facilities
Regular social events

If i were looking...

Quality of course
Excellent greens
Availability all year round
Not too stuffy!
Not too busy, restricted pay n play
Good facilities

when i lived at home it was the closest. 5 mins in the car.

when I moved to Liverpool there was a few boardies already at lee park. easy choice! 10 mins in car.

I couldn't deal with a 30+minute trip to and from the course.

private members club, upholds the traditions of golf, good course and club house, plenty of social functions and events, very limited times for visitors and society golfers,no booking tee times (except comps),good pro shop and good teaching pro, great members.

Do they move the flags regularly.

Well........everything else seems to have been covered :D

Not sure its been mentioned yet but I'd check how much money do they want and does that represent value for money for you

1. Friendly members
2. Good greens
3. Not too far to travel (that's personal preference)

That's it ! If you get those you do not need to worry about anything else.

Some great answers already. One thing in addition, can you do a short number of holes eg are there 2 loops of 9 holes. Sometimes 18 is too many so having the option to do just a few holes is very handy.

Mine is amount of competitions, I have no interest in only having access to one medal a month! especially in the summer!!

Unless the club has a competition on pretty much every week and a fair few midweek, i wouldnt consider joining!

When i moved up here and wanted to find a new club my criteria was:

Locality/Distance to travel
Course quality
Cost
Availability of weekend tee times
Competition entry - drawn v non-drawn
Roll Ups/Swindles
Clubhouse facilities

Having been here 2 years now i think i've made the right decision. The VFM is good, the roll ups and members are good, competitions are generally drawn and if not i now know enough people to just thrown my name down. Whilst our place is a "top 100 hidden gem" i don't think it is the best presented and prettiest that i have now played locally and Market Rasen beats it within my area of possible travel but with any golf club membership once you're in and accepted it is bloody tough to walk away and start all over again somewhere else without knowing anyone. I'd say it's taken a good 2 years to truly feel part of the club .
